TWICE Becomes 1st Foreign Female Artist To Earn RIAJ Platinum Certification For Streaming In Japan; BTS, BLACKPINK, And MAMAMOO Go Gold And Silver

TWICE has made history in Japan!

Last year, the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) implemented a new certification system for online streaming of songs, as an addition to its pre-existing certification systems for physical album shipments and digital download sales. According to the new system, songs are certified silver once they reach 30 million streams, gold at 50 million streams, and platinum at 100 million streams.

In its latest batch of certifications (dated March 2021), the RIAJ officially awarded TWICE’s 2019 hit “Feel Special” a platinum certification in the streaming category after the song surpassed over 100 million streams. Although TWICE has previously received platinum and double platinum certifications from the RIAJ for physical albums, this latest achievement marks the first time that one of their songs has been certified platinum for streaming.

Additionally, “Feel Special” is now the first song by any foreign female act in RIAJ history ever to receive a platinum certification for streaming—and only the second overall song by a K-pop artist to achieve the feat, following BTS’s “Dynamite.”

Meanwhile, MAMAMOO earned their very first gold certification in the streaming category after their hit song “HIP” surpassed 50 million streams. BLACKPINK’s “Kill This Love” and BTS’s Japanese song “Your Eyes Tell” were also both officially certified gold after reaching 50 million streams each.

Finally, BTS’s fan-favorite B-sides “Anpanman” and “Euphoria,” as well as Shaun’s “Way Back Home,” all received official silver certifications after surpassing 30 million streams each.
