Song Joong Ki has been garnering a fresh wave of fans since his portrayal as Vincenzo Cassano, aka Corn Salad on “Vincenzo.” Viewers couldn’t help but fall for his flawless face and heart-stopping charms. For those of you who are new to the wonderful world of being Song Joong Ki’s fan, here are nine things you may not have known about the Hallyu star!
1. He rose to international fame in 2016
Song Joong Ki was already famous in Korea as a result of his role in the historical drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” in 2010. Koreans were quick to fall in love with the actor, but it wasn’t until 2016 that Song Joong Ki was able to rise to Hallyu status. After he appeared in the series “Descendants of the Sun” as Captain Yoo Shi Jin, people all over the world were able to see the appeal of Song Joong Ki. That year, he won the Baeksang Arts Award for most popular actor and also got the Daesang at the KBS Drama Awards. This drama kick-started his international fame and it’s been heading full force since!

2. He is a published author
In 2010, Song Joong Ki and beauty editor Hwang Min Young wrote a book together titled “Beautiful Skin Project For Men.” Because Song Joong Ki was known to have such flawless skin, people were dying to know his secrets and skincare how-to! The book hit number one on the bestsellers list at the time. Seriously, what can’t he do?!
3. He sang for the OST for one of his dramas
Song Joong Ki starred in the 2012 melodrama “The Innocent Man” as bad boy Kang Ma Ru. The series was a huge success at the time, and it shot Song Joong Ki to stardom nationally. What made this drama particularly special was that he was able to sing on the OST.

4. He first appeared on the show “Quiz Korea”
Before Song Joong Ki even debuted in the 2008 movie “Frozen Flower,” he was a guest on the show “Quiz Korea.” He had appeared on the show last minute, going in place of another contestant who fell ill at the time. He was able to showcase his intellectual strength by placing second on the show!

5. His BFF is Lee Kwang Soo
Lee Kwang Soo is the friend that Song Joong Ki continuously mentions in his interviews. He has even said that when Lee Kwang Soo visited him in the military, it gave him the most energy and strength. He also frequently sleeps over at his house and had once even bumped into the “Running Man” members while staying over.
Lee Kwang Soo also went to the wedding of Song Joong Ki’s older brother because Joong Ki was in the military and couldn’t attend. It was also revealed that Lee Kwang Soo visited his family often, bringing gifts and spending time with them. How cute is this friendship?
6. He doesn’t use social media
Song Joong Ki has mentioned on several occasions that he doesn’t use social media. He said that he’s not very tech-savvy, and one time in an interview, he was asked how his fans can reach him on social media, and he said to just leave a message or questions on Lee Kwang Soo’s account.
Thankfully, his new company HiSTORY has been actively managing his new social media account and has been uploading a lot of videos on their YouTube channel. This is great news for his fans as we are able to get frequent updates about the megastar!

7. He used to be a speed skater
Song Joong Ki trained to be a skater since he was in first grade. He trained diligently for about 12 years and used to be a short track speed skater. He was so talented and trained so hard for it that he even competed in the National Sports Festival several times as a representative for his city, Daejeon. His reason for quitting was due to an ankle injury that he got when he was 15 years old.
His background in skating definitely helped him for his role in “Vincenzo”!
8. He was very popular in college
This is a given. With looks like Song Joong Ki, it would be impossible not to hear about him while being a student. He was on the cover of a college magazine and also mentioned in an interview that he never dated while being in college.
9. Song Joong Ki can rap
In an old clip, Song Joong Ki collaborated with rapper Outsider in 2009. Netizens were impressed with his ability to keep up with the rapper and his ability to totally pull off looking like an idol!
