Kim Seo Hyung Talks About Playing A Lesbian Character In "Mine," Admiration For Lee Bo Young, And More
On June 28, actress Kim Seo Hyung sat down for an interview to talk about the ending of her tvN drama “Mine.”
“Mine” is a drama about strong and ambitious women who overcome society’s prejudices in order to find what’s truly theirs. Lee Bo Young starred as Seo Hee Soo, a former top actress and the wife of the second son of the chaebol family Hyowon Group, and Kim Seo Hyung starred as Jung Seo Hyun, the wife of the eldest son of Hyowon Group.

“Mine” enjoyed solid ratings throughout its run and went out on a personal best of 10.5 percent. Kim Seo Hyung shared that she had anticipated that it would be popular, adding, “Of all my recent projects, it’s been a while since I felt so good while doing it.”
Her character, Jung Seo Hyun, is a cold and charismatic woman from an elegant and well-born family background. Although she is married to Han Jin Ho (Park Hyuk Kwon), the eldest son of Hyowon Group (whose first marriage ended in divorce), she is in love with another woman.
Kim Seo Hyung said, “When I first read the script, I thought that I needed to be careful and responsible about how I portrayed the character. But I didn’t feel a sense of pressure or intimidation about playing a character who is a sexual minority. I thought that if I had the chance, I could do it well.”
She went on, “I chose the drama because it was a romance. Rather than a story about sexual minorities, it was a story about love. As an actor, I felt a sense of ambition in playing this character. Her background is also quite different from mine. Every actor aspires to play a cool role like this. When I thought about playing this kind of character in the past, I always believed that I could do it comfortably. That’s why I chose this project.”
In “Mine,” Jung Seo Hyun reunites with her first love, Choi Su Ji (Kim Jung Hwa). Kim Seo Hyung said, “Every scene in which Jung Hwa and I met was ardent. Our first shoot together was on the bridge at Hyowon Group, and we acted it as if we’d known each other for months. I was grateful to be able to act eye-to-eye with her.”
In the final episode, Jung Seo Hyun becomes the president of Hyowon Group. In the past, she had given up on her first love, but at the end, she calls Choi Su Ji and declares, “I’ll go to wherever you are.” Kim Seo Hyung explained, “I don’t think that going to find Su Ji necessarily means that she’ll achieve true love. I think that she’s ready to meet Su Ji in some form, whether it’s friendship or something else, and that’s also her way of facing up to her own self. Within Hyowon Group, Seo Hyun found what’s truly hers. I hope that it didn’t end on an exclamation point for viewers.”
Jung Seo Hyun and Seo Hee Soo’s relationship in “Mine” was also a key point for viewers. Kim Seo Hyung said, “I think that Lee Bo Young is amazing. It’s amazing that she can take care of her children and work at the same time. In our conversations, we learned that we had gone through similar things as actors, so we had a lot of things we could relate to. Because of that, our chemistry couldn’t be anything but good.”
