BTS Becomes 1st Group To Replace Its Own No. 1 Debut On Hot 100 As "Permission To Dance" Takes Over "Butter's" Streak
BTS’s hot streak on the top of the Hot 100 continues as “Permission to Dance” replaces “Butter” at the top of the chart!
On July 19 local time, Billboard announced that BTS’s new song, “Permission to Dance,” had debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, Billboard’s famous weekly ranking of the most popular songs in the United States. “Permission to Dance” takes over the No. 1 spot previously held by BTS’s own “Butter,” which held that top spot for a record-breaking seven straight weeks.

“Permission to Dance” is BTS’s fifth song to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 (after “Dynamite,” “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo, “Life Goes On,” and “Butter”). It took just over 10 months for BTS to accomplish five No. 1 hits, which is the fastest time since Michael Jackson did so within nine months in 1987-88.
According to Billboard, BTS is the fourth act with at least four No. 1 debuts on the Hot 100, after Ariana Grande (five), Justin Bieber (four), and Drake (four). BTS is also the first act to dethrone themselves at No. 1 on the Hot 100 since Drake last did so in 2018. BTS is the fifth group in Billboard history to have replaced itself at the top of the Hot 100, and the first group to have replaced their own No. 1 debut with another No. 1 debut. (A “No. 1 debut” on the Hot 100 means that the song made its first appearance on the Hot 100 chart at No. 1.)
