Longtime Boy Group Member And Solo Artist Proves His Emotional And Vocal Range After Confusing Panelists About His Gender
On the August 29 episode of MBC’s “The King of Mask Singer,” four contestants continued their quest to dethrone the current champion, Virtual Boyfriend.

After winning against Our House in Round 2, Rubber Shoes went on to face Mung Bean Pancake Gentleman in Round 3.
Rubber Shoes chose to sing Yoon Jong Shin’s “Uphill Road” and showed off his warm vocals and wide emotional range. Mung Bean Pancake Gentleman sang Lee Mi Ja’s “Camellia Lady” and moved the audience with his ability to express the song’s lyrics and emotions.
With 18 votes to 3, Mung Bean Pancake Gentleman advanced to challenge the champion, and Rubber Shoes took off his mask to reveal himself as Super Junior’s Sungmin.
In earlier rounds of the show, Sungmin had confused the panelists about whether he was a male or female vocalist due to his wide vocal range. He said, “After hearing a lot of, ‘Is this person a man or a woman?’, I got swept up in it and tried to trick everyone some more. I even got a pedicure.”
Sungmin’s wife, musical actress and singer Kim Sa Eun, had appeared on “The King of Mask Singer” first. “I really wanted to appear on this show, so I was jealous of her,” he said. “I helped her practice a lot, and somehow I was able to get here as well.” He shared that his wife had helped him for his own appearance by analyzing his physical composition and preferences.
Sungmin is currently gearing up for a solo comeback with a digital single. He said, “I’m working hard at learning how to write and compose songs. I want to hold a concert with the songs I’ve written and gift my junior artists with good songs as well.”
