TWICE Talks About Their Latest Comeback Concept, Releasing New Studio Album, And Chart Success

TWICE participated in a Q&A for their latest comeback with their new studio album, “Formula of Love: O+T=<3”!

“Formula of Love: O+T=<3” is TWICE’s third studio album, released on November 12, along with the music video for title track “SCIENTIST.” This is TWICE’s third comeback in 2021, after releasing their 10th mini album “Taste of Love” in June, earning them their first top 10 entry on the Billboard 200, and releasing the English single “The Feels” in October, which gave them their first Billboard Hot 100 entry.

About their comeback process, Momo said, “It’s the first time in a year that we’ve released a studio album, so we’re looking forward to it. We’ve prepared a lot of diverse b-side tracks, so I hope that it’s an album that people enjoy listening to.” Jihyo added, “Once again, we prepared with the mindset, ‘I hope our fans will like it.'” Mina said, “Since it’s a full album, we were able to show our fans more tracks. I’m grateful to them for waiting for us.”

Regarding their Billboard success, Nayeon said, “When an album that we worked hard on receives a lot of love, we feel proud and happy. But we were also happy during the preparation process for this album, and since we think that we were able to grow a little, we are working not to feel a sense of pressure about the results.”

Sana said, “Because there are a lot of people who like our unique color, I’m grateful that we’re able to try a lot of new things. It would be a lie to say that we feel no pressure at all, but we’re always more excited to see what kind of reaction our fans will have when we release an album.” Dahyun added, “Since it’s the first time in a while that we’ll meet our fans, we’re happy and working hard not to feel pressured.”

Explaining their album title, Jihyo said, “ONCE [TWICE’s fan club] as 1 plus TWICE as 2 equals a heart (<3), but also TWICE’s third (3) studio album. Did you recognize that hidden meaning? We want to go hand in hand with ONCE in our future albums as well.”

Jeongyeon clarified, “TWICE is T, and ONCE is O, and the two added together equals love. It felt meaningful to put both our group name and our fandom name in the title.” Momo added, “During our performance, we express the ‘O+T=<3’ through our movements! It passes by in a blink, so please keep your eyes open and look out for it.”

About their new title track, “SCIENTIST,” and the music video, Nayeon said, “It means that love is something that you have to follow your heart in, not something to be researched and seek answers for. The message, ‘There’s no answer, so just follow your heart,’ was memorable for me. I hope that people can feel a sense of strength and energy from our music.”

Jihyo said, “It was the first time I’d smashed sugar glass during the jacket filming. I was a little scared, but it was a new experience.” Mina said, “I remember the scene in which I turned bad and smashed glass with a golf club. It was the first time that I’d worn a bangs piece, but it was a new style for me and it kept bothering me a little.” Tzuyu said, “There was a robot dog on the filming set and it really understood what I said. It was really fascinating and cute.”

Of their b-side tracks, Nayeon recommended “MOONLIGHT,” Jeongyeon recommended “ESPRESSO,” Momo, Sana, and Mina recommended “REWIND,” Jihyo recommended “ESPRESSO and CACTUS,” Dahyun recommended “ICON” and “CRUEL,” Chaeyoung recommended “ICON,” and Tzuyu recommended “CACTUS,” which Jihyo wrote and composed.
