'School 2021' Responds To Reports Of Injunction Filed By Former Production Company

KBS 2TV’s upcoming drama “School 2021” has officially responded to reports of an injunction filed by its former production company SR Pictures.

On November 17, Yonhap News reported that back in August, SR Pictures had filed an injunction against production companies Kingsland and RaemongRaein, as well as broadcast network KBS, to cease production of their drama “School 2021.”

Last year, SR Pictures and Kingsland were initially planning to co-produce the drama, which was then called “School 2020.” However, according to SR Pictures, they terminated their contract due to internal circumstances at Kingsland, such as unpaid actors’ fees and not going through with filming. Therefore, SR Pictures asserted that they alone hold the production rights to “School 2021.”

However, Kingsland and KBS responded by noting that the contract between SR Pictures and Kingsland had originally been for another drama called “Oh My Men” (literal translation). Later, when programming for the drama fell through, they began to work on “School 2020,” which also fell through—and it was only afterwards that they began producing “School 2021” together with RaemongRaein.

Additionally, Kingsland revealed that in September, they had countersued the head of SR Pictures for fraud. According to Kingsland, SR Pictures had hidden the fact that they had failed to find a network to air “Oh My Men” at the time the contract was forged, leading to hundreds of millions of won [hundreds of thousands of dollars] worth of damages.

The producers of “School 2021” first clarified, “The injunction filed by production company SR Pictures was not to halt the airing of the drama, but to prohibit production.”

They went on to explain, “Initially, Kingsland and SR Pictures signed a contract for ‘Oh My Men,’ and though they later switched to ‘School 2020’ and worked on production, programming for that drama also fell through. ‘School 2021,’ which is being produced by Kingsland and RaemongRaein, consists of new content and subject matter. There will be no negative impact on the broadcasting [of ‘School 2021’].”

Meanwhile, “School 2021” recently postponed its premiere by one week after star WEi’s Kim Yo Han was diagnosed with COVID-19. The drama is currently scheduled to begin airing on November 24.
