Gong Seung Yeon Talks About Winning Rookie Awards, Living With Her Sister TWICE's Jeongyeon, And More
Gong Seung Yeon recently talked about winning a rookie award, living with her sister TWICE’s Jungyeon, her upcoming roles, and more with Cosmopolitan Korea!
At the end of 2021, Gong Seung Yeon closed out the year with a bang by winning Best New Actress for the film “Aloners” at the 42nd Blue Dragon Film Awards. The actress shared with a laugh, “This is my first magazine interview after winning the award. I still feel dazed. For a while, I rewatched the video of my award everyday. I still get choked up watching myself say my acceptance speech.”
Although Gong Seung Yeon has won multiple awards for her role as Jin Ah in “Aloners,” she shared that winning at the Blue Dragon Film Awards felt different. She explained, “While acting, I wondered whether I’d ever be able to go to the Blue Dragon Film Awards. I am so happy and thankful that I received such an incredible award for my first feature film.”
Gong Seung Yeon added, “When I was in my twenties [by Korean reckoning], I kept doubting whether I was doing well on my journey as an actress. After receiving this award I thought, ‘I can focus a bit more on acting. I’m allowed to do that.'”
Since her character Jin Ah in “Aloners” was such an extreme introvert, Gong Seung Yeon spoke about her own tendencies to enjoy time alone. She shared, “After living alone, it’s been about six months since I started living with my younger sister [TWICE’s Jeongyeon]. I’m a homebody so once I get home, I don’t come out often or reply to many messages. But when I do go out, I have the best time and then lay down as soon as I get home. You know what I mean? When I’m alone, I mostly just lay down and watch Netflix. I feel happy even if I’m just laying down.”
She elaborated on what it’s like living with Jeongyeon, hilariously sharing, “It was recently Jeongyeon’s birthday so I asked what she wanted as a gift and she said, ‘I wish you would move out.'” Gong Seung Yeon continued, “We joke around like this but there are a lot of comfortable aspects to us being together. We also divide household chores. Ironically, after moving in together, I feel like we talk less. When we lived apart, we would ask what the other was up to and speak more in-depth but now we just talk about more day-to-day things like, ‘Are you home?’ and ‘Hey, cook this.’ We’re a real family.”
The interviewer touched on Gong Seung Yeon’s dedication to acting and mentioned the time she was a rookie and attended an academy for news anchors before portraying the role of one. Gong Seung Yeon explained, “I really wanted to do well. Since I was a complete rookie and no one knew who I was, I figured that I should at least go once to the news anchor academy. I listened to mock lessons.”
She shared a similar experience, saying, “When I was doing the drama ‘Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency,’ I acted as a character who worked at the market. Since it was a character who would personally handle and debone fish, I ordered 100 mackerels to my house and practiced hitting its head and dismantling it. My freezer was full of mackerel so that’s all I ate for a while. However, I thought about how hard I was working and that became a driving force when I was acting.”
The actress then spoke about her upcoming role in “The Police Station Next to the Fire Station” (literal translation). Gong Seung Yeon commented, “These days, I’m preparing a paramedic character. I looked up information on how to become a paramedic and I bought a book on emergency medicine and have been reading it. I’ve even tied a rubber band around my younger sister Jeongyeon’s arm and pretended to practice putting needles in.”
Although filming hasn’t even begun, “The Police Station Next to the Fire Station” has already been confirmed for a second season. Gong Seung Yeon shared, “It’s a format where each episode features a new story so it’s new and I like it. When filming dramas, I especially like meeting a lot of new people so I like that each episode features many different actors. I’m waiting for the first filming so I think the drama will air in the first half of the year, at the earliest.”
Now that Gong Seung Yeon is 30 years old by Korean reckoning, the interviewer asked whether the actress reads a lot into age and being in your thirties. She replied saying that she does and added, “Ever since I was younger, I had this vague expectation of, ‘I’m going to be really successful in my thirties.’ As I received a big award at the end of my twenties and started off my thirties well, I hope I’m able to shine more as I continue to work hard while acting.”
On how she wants to spend her thirties, Gong Seung Yeon shared, “I want there to be more leeway. I’m not the type to have a lot of worries or dwell on things but I hope my thirties are a bit more relaxed than right now. I just want to become a cool adult.”
The actress elaborated, “Someone who doesn’t alternate between happy and sad at the slightest issues and just silently does their own thing. You have to take care of others more and know how to view the world with a wider perspective. Someone who is firm and can remain standing, even on their own. Ever since I was in my twenties I’ve thought, ‘My thirties are going to shine and be really pretty,’ but it’s really going to be like that. Really.”
