Super Junior's Kyuhyun On Wrapping Up His "4 Season Project," How He's Changed Since His Solo Debut, And More
On January 25, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun held a press conference for the release of his fourth solo mini album “Love Story (4 Season Project 季)”!
“Love Story” is the final mini album of “PROJECT : 季” (“PROJECT : Season”) where Kyuhyun released a new song for every season between July 2020 and January 2022.
Kyuhyun commented, “Starting from the summer of 2020, combined with this fall and winter, there is a total of six songs. While doing this ‘4 Season Project,’ I was just going to do ‘Quarterly Cho Kyuhyun,’ but it felt like I was copying ‘Monthly Yoon Jong Shin,'” a monthly song release project by Yoon Jong Shin, who was also the host of Kyuhyun’s press conference.
Although he’s always wanted to do a seasonal project like this, Kyuhyun shared that it wasn’t easy. He candidly explained, “I thought that [Yoon Jong Shin] was amazing. I always work without the thought that I want to do well, but it’s not easy. Honestly, I started this too without any big desires so there wasn’t a lot of promotion, but I can’t help but look at the charts. There are no album sales or performances so that’s regretful. While [Yoon Jong Shin] has secured his place, I’m not too sure about myself. That’s why I felt quite regretful.”
Kyuhyun confessed, “I’ve honestly never read a love story. But I like the film ‘Love Story’ so I liked the [song] title. [The project] happened to overlap with my musical so I had no choice but to release the album now. To be honest, recording was already finished. It was done before last winter but since we wanted to continue until the winter, we decided to create an album with these good songs.”
Thinking back to when he first heard the demo of “Love Story,” Kyuhyun commented, “The first time I released a [solo] album was around 2014 and I was reminded a lot of that time.” All throughout his career, Kyuhyun has received lots of love for his ballads. Regarding this, Kyuhyun shared, “I listen to ballads 364 days of the year and I like that. I like them whether it’s warm, cold, or cool. There are songs I steadily always listen to. I don’t get tired of ballads. On the remaining day, I listen to carols on Christmas Eve. On that day only, I decide not to listen to ballads and only listen to carols.”
Kyuhyun is now in his 18th year as a member of Super Junior and his ninth as a solo artist. He commented, “At first, I vaguely wanted to become a singer. Because I enjoyed singing, I wanted to become someone who sang. When I made my solo debut in 2014, it was the first solo album that the agency had released and it had already been pushed back once. We said that we would stop after just releasing ‘At Gwanghwamun,’ but I remember being so happy that it did well and I felt so glad thinking, ‘I’m allowed to sing.'”
He added, “However, now I feel like I have to make even better songs that people relate to even more. Unlike the beginning, I think my mind has changed to think that I now have to satisfy someone and convey more of a message. At times I wonder whether this is what it’s like to become a pro, but then it feels like my innocent passion for music has changed from when I was young and naïve. I feel sad about that but I also think that’s how you grow.”
Regarding his goals for this year, Kyuhyun explained, “Personally, I want to work a little and not get stressed, give my fans more quality content, and work with high efficiency. Honestly, I’ve shown a lot of myself on stage or on broadcasts but I want to show more of human Kyuhyun to those who like him. I want to communicate more.”
Lastly, Kyuhyun shared, “Originally, I was going to release ‘Love Story’ in the fall and then make more winter songs but after hearing this track, I thought that it was a fitting ending song.”
