Spring: “Feel My Rhythm,” “BAMBOLEO,” and “In My Dreams”
From the languid and melancholic “One of These Nights” to the lively “Light Me Up,” Red Velvet has had their fair share of songs that fit the spring season. And their most recent mini album “The ReVe Festival 2022 – Feel My Rhythm” coined them as the ethereal Spring Queens, so it would feel remiss if we didn’t give some of the songs on this album a moment to shine.
First up is their title track “Feel My Rhythm.” Sampling Bach’s “Air on the G String,” the song opens up with a cool, winter vibe and breaks out into a mix of elegance and whimsy that is perfect to welcome spring. As Joy’s killing part suggests, “Blow more confetti / let off more fireworks,” this song is all about celebrating a new beginning.
Next up is “BAMBOLELO.” Much like their title track, this song marks a new beginning with the lyrics, “To the left to right, I sway all night (Oh) / To the left to right, I feel the vibe (Oh) / To the left to right, I come alive / I can fly to the moon.” It feels cinematic as if it would play in a movie where the couple-to-be is roller skating under neon lights and locks eyes for the first time. Spring is the time for love, and this song is the perfect start to a love story.
But unfortunately, love doesn’t always blossom, and that’s why the enchanting “In My Dreams” exists. It has all the makings of a dreamy love song with its magnetic instrumental and alluring harmonies, but the lyrics tell a sad tale. The best part of the song is the lyric, “In my dreams, you love me back.” It never seems to be sung the same way twice. Joy sings the line as if she’s resigning to the limits of the relationship. Yeri and Seulgi’s duet of the repeated line is filled with longing and feels like they’re making a final plea for their lover to come back. But it’s Irene’s version that stands out the most. It’s absolutely haunting, almost as if something more ominous lies in the relationship. It marks the making of a perfect Red Velvet song: no matter how dreamy it may seem, there’s something eerie lurking in the background. This song captures the hope and despair one feels when they’re in love, making it a must-listen for the springtime.
Summer: “Red Flavor,” “Power Up,” and “Hello, Sunset”
With a plethora of punchy “red” songs in their discography, there isn’t a shortage of Red Velvet songs to get you in the mood for summer. However, if I had to pick a few that are a must-listen as soon as the weather begins to warm, they would be “Red Flavor,” “Power Up,” and “Hello, Sunset.”
“Red Flavor” is the ultimate classic since the song earned them their first season title as Summer Queens. It’s upbeat, lively, and makes you feel like you’re at a summer party even if you’re just dancing alone in your room.
Similarly, “Power Up” is zingy and refreshing, which makes it the perfect song to give a boost of energy when you have the blues on a hot summer afternoon.
But summer isn’t always synonymous with upbeat dance songs. Sometimes you need something slow to enjoy those languid summer nights by the pool when you watch the sunset go down, and that’s when “Hello, Sunset” comes in. Red Velvet’s soothing vocals on this breezy track completely transport you away from the craziness of summer to your oasis where you’re sipping on your favorite iced drink without a care in the world.
Fall: “Peek-A-Boo,” “Really Bad Boy,” and “Kingdom Come”
Although Red Velvet is known for never repeating concepts, one thing you can always expect them to serve is something bright with a little bit of creepiness. With its whimsical sound, visual illusions in the choreography, and the ultimate cat-and-mouse chase in the music video, “Peek-A-Boo” is easily one of their best songs to put you in the mood for autumn.
Then there’s their Halloween serve “Really Bad Boy.” With impressive high notes and a haunted-house-themed music video, it’s hard to listen to this song and not think of the spooky season.
Finally, there’s the sultry and bewitching “Kingdom Come.” If summer is the season for their red songs, then fall is the perfect season for their velvet. “Kingdom Come” tells a fantastical love story that seems too good to be true. With the longing lyrics, “Even if you’re a fantasy that’ll disappear once I open my eyes / I won’t let you go,” this song evokes the fleeting feelings of fall — it may not last long, but it always leaves a lasting impression on the heart.
Winter: “Psycho” and “Remember Forever”
Similar to fall, winter is also the season to dip into the velvet side of the group. It would be remiss not to mention “Psycho,” which has a chilling and mysterious vibe synonymous with the despairs of the cold season. Seulgi’s and Wendy’s opening falsettos perfectly set the eerie but beautiful tone of the song, which details the story of a tumultuous relationship.
But winter isn’t always a metaphorical representation of death. It’s also a time of year that’s filled with magic and a celebration of love. This is why “Remember Forever” is by far the perfect track to listen to in the winter season. From the very first second, the piano and soft bells evoke the vibe of a snowy winter sleigh ride home, and Irene’s vocals on the opening verse, “All the lights are out tonight like the world is asleep / Now everything turns into a memory,” are what truly makes the song magical. Her low tone is warm and enchanting, and it captures the nostalgic feelings that come as you take a final look at all of the memories you’ve made at the end of the year.
