BTS Makes History As "Proof" Debuts At No. 1 On Billboard 200 With Biggest U.S. Sales Week Of Any Group This Year
BTS has just scored their sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200!
On June 19 local time, Billboard officially announced that BTS’s new anthology album “Proof” had debuted at No. 1 on its famous Top 200 Albums chart, its weekly ranking of the most popular albums in the United States.
Despite consisting mainly of previously released songs, “Proof” achieved the biggest U.S. sales week of any album by a group thus far in 2022—and the second-biggest overall, following the debut week of Harry Styles’ “Harry House.”
According to Luminate (formerly MRC Data), “Proof” earned an impressive 314,000 equivalent album units during the week ending on June 16. The album’s total score consisted of 266,000 traditional album sales, 12,000 track equivalent album (TEA) units, and 36,000 streaming equivalent album (SEA) units—which translates to 52.84 million on-demand audio streams in the album’s first week.
Just over 259,000 of the traditional album sales achieved by “Proof” were in CD sales, marking the “largest sales week for an album on CD in the U.S. since Adele’s ’30,'” which sold 378,000 CDs in its first week last year. For comparison, Billboard noted, “The vast majority of the CD sales for ’30’ came from the $11.98 and $13.98 editions,” while “there are two CD variants available in total [for ‘Proof’]: a $24 version and a $70 version.”
Additionally, as “Proof” is BTS’s sixth album to enter the chart at No. 1, the group is now the first—and so far, only—Korean artist ever to top the Billboard 200 with six different albums. BTS’s first No. 1 album was “Love Yourself: Tear” in June 2018, followed by “Love Yourself: Answer,” “Map of the Soul: Persona,” “Map of the Soul: 7,” and “BE.”
Including “Proof,” only 15 non-English language albums have ever topped the Billboard 200 in the history of the chart—meaning that out of those 15 No. 1 albums, six have been by BTS.
Congratulations to BTS on their historic achievement!
