Watch: 8 Girl Group Rappers Want To Overcome Stereotypes In Teaser For New JTBC Singing Competition
JTBC has unveiled a teaser for its upcoming program “The Second World“!
“The Second World” is a brand-new survival show in which eight skillful girl group rappers will go head-to-head in a singing competition. In order to break the prejudice that girl group rappers lack singing skills, the contestants will showcase their vocals and prove that they are truly multi-talented.
The show’s star-studded lineup of rappers includes former Wonder Girls member Yubin, former AOA member Shin Jimin, MAMAMOO’s Moonbyul, Oh My Girl’s Mimi, WJSN’s Exy, MOMOLAND’s JooE, Billlie’s Moon Sua, and CLASS:y’s Kim Seonyou.
In the newly released teaser, the contestants open up about struggling with the preconceptions people have of girl group rappers. Moonbyul remarks, “Within a group, rappers can only show themselves through about four or eight lines in each song.” Mimi chimes in, “I think being a rapper in an idol group is a character that is very self-limiting.”
JooE confesses, “I really hate the fact that [being a rapper] makes me look as though I don’t have anything to show vocally,” and Exy echoes the sentiment by saying, “I’m always full of longing when it comes to singing.” Kim Seonyou shares that she wants a chance to display her vocal talents, while Moon Sua comments, “I really want to try putting on a performance where I can fill the whole stage on my own.” Speaking more generally, Yubin adds, “I’d like to see the border between rap and vocals become less defined.”
As the clip shows glimpses of the rappers belting their way through their performances, the contestants talk about their confidence in their singing and their desire to prove their talent.
Finally, the teaser ends with Jimin making her return to the stage as she says in voice-over, “Because it was my first time stepping on stage in a long while, I think I poured all my sincerity into my performance.”
“The Second World” will premiere on August 30 at 8:50 p.m. KST. In the meantime, check out the new teaser below!
