An Unforeseen Adventure: 5 Reasons To Watch "Side Story Of Fox Volant"
Adapted from Jin Yong’s classic Wuxia novel of the same name, “Side Story of Fox Volant,” which is also known as “The Young Flying Fox” to fans, tells the story of an orphan named Hu Fei and his mission to get revenge for the murders of his parents and uncle. His road to retribution gets complicated as he falls for a warlord’s daughter and becomes anxious to cure a blind man. “Side Story of Fox Volant” is an unforeseen adventure from the very first episode! The fantasy series has only just begun, but every moment is already precious. The show’s martial arts is captivating and emotions run high. Here’s a look at five reasons why you have to watch “Side Story of Fox Volant.”
1. The mesmerizing martial arts
Every episode promises a feast for the eyes through the manifestation of intense martial arts scenes. For example, Miao Renfeng (Lin Shen, the star from “Dating in the Kitchen“) is a master and is feared by all. During a friendly meal turned hostile meeting with Official Fu Kang An’s men, they prove to be no match for Miao Renfeng. When Official Fu Kang An (Ye Xiang Ming) asks Miao Renfeng to be an imperial bodyguard, he declines. His rejection transforms the entire situation into an all-out martial arts war against Official Fu Kang An’s men.
While Miao Renfeng expects the opposition, he didn’t expect even the female host to have an even bigger grudge against him. But the female host’s loved one is murdered, which is why she wants to avenge his untimely death by murdering Miao Renfeng. But he narrowly escapes death in this scary ordeal. Watching Miao Renfeng take on local and visiting warriors will leave you completely spellbound. Actor Lin Shen is completely believable as the incomparable legend, and he deserves a standing ovation for his role.
2. Gorgeous historical clothes
There’s a lot of great fashion in this drama. When Nan Lan (Maggie Huang) comes to town with her father, she is wearing the finest fabric and fur that money can buy. Her attire displays the extensive wealth that the Nan family enjoys. Miao Renfeng saves her life during their first meeting, but none of the intense fighting surrounding her puts a wrinkle on her garment.
On the other hand, Ma Chun Hua’s (Hai Ling’s) family isn’t rich, but they own their own business. She has adorably styled hair and wears impeccable clothes. It’s no surprise that the young men in this drama are instantly attracted to her beauty which is enhanced by her bright attire!
Then there’s character Yuan Zi Yi, who enters the series in a stunning outfit herself. The flowing fabrics over her warrior garb will make every viewer a little envious.
3. The incredible cast
In addition to Lin Shen as the legendary hero Miao Renfeng, the main cast does an incredible job with their significant roles. There’s actor Qin Jun Jie, who previously impressed in “Listening Snow Tower,” leading the series as the fearless lad named Hu Fei. He is on a mission of revenge for his loved ones. Hu Fei considers the expert martial artist Miao Renfeng as his sworn enemy and blames him for the murder of his parents. Unfortunately, Miao Renfeng fought his dad with a poisoned sword. Qin Jun Jie is a pillar of strength and perseverance as Hu Fei.
Then there’s Liang Jie, who starred in numerous works such as “You Are My Destiny,” “The Eternal Love” series, “The Day of Becoming You,” and more. She portrays the powerful character Yuan Zi Yi. Following a terrible attack from an elder, Yuan Zi Yi decides to rise up and become a feared fighter of her own. She is a warlord’s daughter whom Hu Fei develops feelings for. Liang Jie is everyone’s crush in this role, and her force is unbelievable!
And actress Xing Fei, who captivated viewers through “My Little Happiness,” “Hello, the Sharpshooter,” and “Miss Crow with Mr. Lizard,” completes Hu Fei’s expected love triangle with her portrayal of the medicine king’s apprentice named Cheng Ling Su. Hu Fei meets her during his search for medicine for an ailing blind man. And while Cheng Ling Su has feelings for Hu Fei, it is highly unlikely that he will return her love. Xing Fei’s character is very relatable, and she is great in her role.
4. The comedy
Despite the heated battles and emotional scenes, there are some moments of humor in “Side Story of Fox Volant.” On Hu Fei’s way to Foshan, he hilariously meets Tianshan Sect’s Yuan Zi Yi. Her horse splashes mud on him, and he pursues her. But his horse can’t catch up to her, and he ends up falling off his horse. When he finally catches up with Yuan Zi Yi, Hu Fei accidentally sees her taking a bath, and she steals Hu Fei’s clothes and belongings in return. The hilarious thing is that all of this happens during their first meeting!
And the comedy doesn’t stop there. When the two martial arts experts arrive in Foshen separately, they team up once again for justice for the residents. But the wealth of money they obtain for catching criminals is used at a local casino. Hu Fei and Yuan Zi Yi increase their winnings so much that they have enough to buy the casino itself!
5. An unexpected romance
Hu Fei’s life is filled with action and romance as his story unfolds. Everyone assumes he falls in love and will either have a happy or tragic ending. However, the biggest shock for the supporting characters arrives early in the series.
Hu Fei’s childhood friend Ma Chun Hua is supposed to follow the elders’ rules and marry someone they choose for her. She is reluctant to accept any of their choices because she has no feelings for them. But when the charming Official Fu arrives, Ma Chun Hua is swept off her feet by his sweet words and kindness. The pair even share a kiss during their first meeting! Unfortunately, dates under the stars are short-lived when Official Fu’s duties call him away. Of course, there is plenty of time for more surprising romance with even more characters in the episodes ahead.
