Watch: Kim Hye Soo, Choi Won Young, And More Share Excitement For "The Queen's Umbrella" At 1st Script Reading
“The Queen’s Umbrella” has unveiled a making video from their first script reading!
tvN’s “The Queen’s Umbrella” is a new historical drama that centers on the special palace education system of the Joseon Dynasty. The drama will follow the conflict within the palace over trying to make proper princes out of its five troublemaking princes, who cause nothing but headaches for the royal family.
The drama stars Kim Hye Soo, Kim Hae Sook, Choi Won Young, Kim Eui Sung, Moon Sang Min, SF9’s Chani, Ok Ja Yeon, Bae In Hyuk, Kim Ga Eun, Yoo Seon Ho, Yoon Sang Hyun, Kim Min Ki, and more.
After the cast and crew greet each other, Kim Hye Soo introduces herself to the camera as queen Im Hwa Ryung, the wife of a great king and the long-suffering mother of five troublemaking sons. She remarks, “Although the time period in the drama is fictional, [Hwa Ryung] is the busiest queen, busiest mother, and the most fierce and active woman of that generation.”
King Lee Ho, who is husband to Im Hwa Ryung, is played by Choi Won Young. He shares, “He holds all the virtues of a Joseon Dynasty king and is a great king who opens an excellent era for Joseon. He has conflict with public servants who wish for a scarecrow king [who is powerless and controlled by others] and is someone who is insecure about being born to a concubine.” In particular, he will quarrel lots with Hwang Won Hyung (Kim Eui Sung).
Queen Dowager and Im Hwa Ryung’s mother-in-law will be portrayed by Kim Hae Sook. She’s a living legend among the concubines and female palace officials for helping her child born out of wedlock become a great king. While she is overflowing with immense love for her son, she does not spare even half of that for her grandchildren and often goes head-to-head with Im Hwa Ryung.
Additional cast members include Ok Ja Yeon as Hwang Gwi In, the No. 1 concubine who is the Queen Dowager’s favorite and a threat to Im Hwa Ryung, and Kim Ga Eun as Tae So Yong, another concubine. The princes will be played by Bae In Hyuk (crown prince), Moon Sang Min (Sung Nam), SF9’s Chani (Eui Sung), Yoo Seon Ho (Gye Sung), Yoon Sang Hyun (Mu Ahn), and Kim Min Ki (Bo Gum).
Regarding why they chose this drama, Kim Hye Soo answered, “It was so fun. It wasn’t simple fun and I thought that the range was very wide. While having the uncanny strength of a historical drama, it really felt very new. I think it’ll become a very fun and refreshing historical drama. It’ll be great if you look forward to it and we will prepare diligently!”
Choi Won Young continued, “What I couldn’t help was that the script was so fun. While these are happenings of a generation I wasn’t able to live in, human greed and one’s love for their children [that are depicted in the drama] are very similar to today’s generation.”
