FTISLAND's Minhwan On Enlisting After Welcoming Twins, The Possibility Of Having Another Baby, And More
FTISLAND’s Minhwan has touched on his family life with Yulhee, the possibility of having more kids, and more on “Radio Star”!
On the October 12 broadcast of MBC’s “Radio Star,” FTISLAND’s Minhwan was a guest alongside Sam Hammington, Jason, Jang Dong Min, and Jo Choong Hyun.
Minhwan is currently raising his three children, Jaeyul, and twins Ah Yoon and Ah Rin, with his wife Yulhee. In September 2017, the pair confirmed their relationship and a few months later, Yulhee left LABOUM. Soon after, they announced their marriage and in May 2018, the couple shared that Yulhee was pregnant and welcomed their first child. In February 2020, Minhwan and Yulhee welcomed their twin girls Ah Yoon and Ah Rin.
When asked about having another baby, Minhwan explained, “I’ve already ‘shut down the factory.’ I got surgery right away [after the twins],” revealing that he got a vasectomy.
Despite the vasectomy, Minhwan shared that Yulhee still implies she wants more kids because she misses things like the smell of a newborn. He added, “If one more is born, we can’t ride a five-person car. Even now, either mom or dad has to watch two kids.” Given how much more there is to consider, Minhwan shared that he was okay with not having more children.
He also revealed that before having their daughters, Yulhee had really wanted twins. The couple thus also considered in vitro fertilization (IVF), but were told it wasn’t possible because of Yulhee’s young age and because they already had a son.
At the time of Minhwan and Yulhee’s first pregnancy, the two were not married and were in their early and mid-twenties. Minhwan commented, “Personally, I debuted really early. I became a trainee in elementary school and debuted in ninth grade. I started in the workforce from a young age so it felt like no one was on my side. I thought that I had to create ‘my person’ so I thought a lot about wanting to quickly start a family.”
Minhwan continued, “These were my thoughts but from Yulhee’s perspective, she’s young and at the age where she should promote lots. At the time, Yulhee was 21 years old [by Korean reckoning]. When we went to tell her parents, I thought, ‘I would rather be hit once. If I’m hit really hard, I think I might feel relieved.’ Instead, her father said very calmly, ‘Do you think you can live well? Can you move forward carrying everything?’ So I said, ‘I will live diligently. Please trust me.'”
By the time Yulhee was pregnant with their twins, Minhwan was set to enlist in the military soon. He explained, “We planned our second-born. We both have siblings who are two years younger than us so we thought two years was a good age gap.” However, while their pregnancy was planned, Minhwan shared that his enlistment was not.
Minhwan commented, “I was still at the age where I didn’t yet have to enlist. I could’ve postponed it but since Hong Ki and our members were going, if I went late, our group promotions would get delayed. While my team is important, I thought about how hard it would be for my wife so I said that I would go a bit later and that we could delay [FTISLAND’s promotions], but my wife said it was okay to go. She said I had to think about my members and that she could do well because she had already raised our first-born, so I went at a similar time [as my members].”
After, Minhwan shared his personal tip for putting kids to bed. He explained that while it’s typical to read children books before bed, that requires a room light to stay on. He added, “Once you turn the light off, they go crazy thinking it’s time to sleep. I turn off the light and turn on rain sounds for white noise. Then I make up stories, talking about toys, foods, and things they like. While talking, since the lights are off, when I say we should sleep, they do.”
