Mina Shares Gratitude For Her TWICE Members, How She's Grown More Comfortable On Stage, And More
Cosmopolitan’s upcoming issue features a lovely interview with TWICE’s Mina!
Following her stunning pictorial, TWICE’s Mina sat for an interview where she discussed her personality, career, and more.
TWICE’s latest comeback track “Talk that Talk” captures the meaning of asking the person you like to confess their feelings. When asked what she would like to hear from the person she likes, Mina answered, “Hm…I think just simply hearing that they like me is reassuring and gives me confidence. I like when they tell you in a straightforward way.”
Mina then added that she wasn’t blunt like this, saying, “I have the type of personality that doesn’t speak up easily. I’m just not good at expressing myself. It’s still hard even with my members. But Chaeyoung will sometimes text me late at night, ‘Unnie~ I love you.'”
Laughing, Mina continued, “[I respond,] ‘You’re not drunk, right?’ But then I reply, ‘I love you too.'”
As TWICE has nine members, Mina explained that it was easy for her voice to get lost in the sea of noise. However, she shared, “Ahead of concerts or fan meetings, I have a lot of opinions. Because I want the performance to be efficient and cool. That’s why I talk a lot about things like trying out new formations or switching up the members’ positions.”
Despite being firm and direct about serious work-related matters, Mina explained that she wasn’t good at being as upfront about smaller matters, such as picking what to eat for dinner. Laughing, Mina commented, “When the members ask, ‘what do you want to eat?’ I end up saying, ‘anything!’ My preferences might not align with another member’s preferences and depending on your mood today, you may want to eat something different. That’s why I’m the type to go along with things.”
The interviewer commented on how Mina always looks so comfortable and at ease on stage, crediting her facial expressions for creating that vibe. Mina explained, “When I first debuted, I worked hard thinking ‘I have to smile.’ However, at a certain point, I realized that didn’t suit me. Even when we performed on music shows, many people told me, ‘Mina, you don’t have to smile if you don’t want to. You look cool even if you don’t smile.’ That’s how I learned that even if I didn’t force myself to smile, I could create a sufficiently cool and bright performance. I think that’s how I was able to more comfortably enjoy our performances.”
This month, TWICE will celebrate their seventh debut anniversary. As she grew up a K-pop fan, Mina shared, “Since I achieved my dream, it was obviously great, but I don’t think these seven years have been only great. There were hard times and I also took a break from promotions. In those moments, I was okay because I had my members. I’m so thankful that it’s the nine of us. Like I mentioned earlier, I’m not good at expressing myself and I’m quite shy but I think the fact that I am able to live true to myself as a member of TWICE is all thanks to my members.”
Looking back on the group’s achievements, Mina was asked about her happiest moment throughout TWICE’s promotions. She responded, “When all nine of us are together. In the past, we would do scheduled activities together every day, but now we have more individual schedules so when we get together, I go ‘Wow!’ and I feel happy to see them again.”
Out of all the performances TWICE has gifted fans over the past seven years, Mina also chose “Cry For Me” as the one that was most representative of herself. She explained, “Fans liked it a lot and I also really liked this performance. Among TWICE’s songs, it’s the only one that’s dark.”
Mina’s full interview and pictorial will be available in the November issue of Cosmopolitan Korea!
TWICE’s “BETWEEN 1&2” has recently become the first 2022 K-pop girl group album to chart on the Billboard 200 for seven weeks and the group has also been nominated for a 2022 American Music Award in the new Favorite K-pop Artist category!
