Cha Tae Hyun, Jung Yong Hwa, And More Discuss Why They Chose To Star In "Brain Works," The Drama's Message, And More
The cast of “Brain Works” has shared their anticipation for the new drama!
On January 2, KBS 2TV held an online press conference for its new drama “Brain Works” with director Lee Jin Seo and cast members Cha Tae Hyun, CNBLUE’s Jung Yong Hwa, Kwak Sun Young, and Ye Ji Won.
“Brain Works” is a brain science-themed comedy-mystery drama about two men who can’t stand each other but who must work together to solve a crime case involving a rare brain disease. Jung Yong Hwa plays Shin Ha Ru, a brain scientist who possesses a very “extraordinary brain,” having everything except humanity. Cha Tae Hyun plays Geum Myung Se, a very nice and considerate detective with an “altruistic brain.”
On casting these two actors, the director commented, “Since Jung Yong Hwa has an image of [acting in] rom-coms, I didn’t think of him as an outstanding actor, but he proved his acting skills in ‘Sell Your Haunted House,’ which is when I started paying attention. When I was making the list of leading roles, his character synchronization was so high that I sent him a call right away.”
He added, “Cha Tae Hyun is Korea’s favorite actor. He’s an actor I’ve always wanted to try filming with. Since his role is the most important for a comedy, he was cast with highest priority. Since he’s done a lot of detective roles recently, I did hesitate, but since there are no other actors who can take on this role besides Cha Tae Hyun, I gave him a script right away. Not long after, he accepted the role and I even had a drink out of happiness.”
The director also highlighted how “Brain Works” is the first Korean brain science-themed comedy drama and added, “The message we want to convey with ‘Brain Works’ is ‘In order to live together, good deeds can be the most selfish.'”
On playing Shin Ha Ru, Jung Yong Hwa commented, “I was drawn in because it was a character I hadn’t done before. What I was most hesitant about was that there were so many lines. It was a personal challenge, but beyond all that, this was a role I really wanted to try.” He added, “After hearing that Cha Tae Hyun was appearing, I became that much more certain [of accepting the role].”
Cha Tae Hyun remarked, “When I first got the script, it was so fun. The character of Ha Ru played by Jung Yong Hwa was incredibly charming.” He added, “Although I haven’t seen this kind of role lately, it’s one that I’ve done a lot. I decided on my appearance because I was drawn to the comedic role.”
Picking their bromance as a highlight of the drama, the two actors expressed their anticipation to win the Best Couple Award at a year-end award show, with Cha Tae Hyun confidently sharing, “KBS will obviously nominate us for bromance.”
Kwak Sun Young plays Forensic Hypnosis Investigator Seol So Jung, who has a timid brain. Ye Ji Won portrays Geum Myung Se’s ex-wife Kim Mo Ran, who has a brain that’s overwhelmed with excess sexual drive.
Kwak Sun Young commented, “After reading the script, I thought that it was really fun. I decided to appear because I really wanted to join the team.” Ye Ji Won added, “It’s the first-ever brain-science comedy that has never been seen in Korea. It captures a variety of brain topics, so I felt intrigued.”
To conclude, director Lee Jin Seo shared, “It’s my first time filming after perfectly receiving 16 scripts. This perfect and immersive story will unfold over 16 episodes so please look forward to it lots.”
“Brain Works” premiered on January 2 and the next episode will air on January 3 at 9:50 p.m. KST!
