Kim Jung Hyun And Im Soo Hyang Rave About The Message Of "Kokdu: Season Of Deity," Their Characters' Charms, And More
The lead stars of “Kokdu: Season of Deity” have spoken about the drama in Singles magazine!
MBC’s “Kokdu: Season of Deity” is a new fantasy romance which tells the story of a grim reaper named Kokdu (Kim Jung Hyun) who comes down to this world to punish humans every 99 years. When Kokdu meets Han Gye Jeol (Im Soo Hyang), a doctor with mysterious abilities, he starts working as a visiting doctor.
Given the fantasy aspect of this drama, the interviewer mentioned that imagining the story was difficult, but that this made them more curious. Im Soo Hyang teased, “What’s important is that we’re having so much fun while filming. The character of Gye Jeol, who I play, is so cute and lovely so it’s very enjoyable.”
Kim Jung Hyun commented, “The script is interesting and there’s a massive amount of lines. That’s why I thought my chemistry with the opposite actor was more important than anything. While acting, I could feel the exchange of energy between me and Soo Hyang so it was fun.”
As “Kokdu: Season of Deity” deals with the heavy topic of death, the drama was assumed to have a dark vibe. However, Im Soo Hyang said reassuringly, “It’s completely different. Instead, all the characters appear like they’re missing a screw so it’s even funny. As kids these days say, it feels like a ‘scramble of nonsense and word vomit.’ Of course joys and sorrows will be portrayed within that, but we tried to express even heavy topics in a lighthearted way.”
On why he chose “Kokdu: Season of Deity” as his first drama in two years, Kim Jung Hyun shared, “Kokdu is a character who is death itself. A transcendent being who connects the underworld and this world. When you think about death, don’t you simultaneously think of light and darkness? He’s a character whose contrast needs to be that stark, and as mentioned earlier, unraveling heavy material in a way that is not [heavy] was charming.”
Im Soo Hyang described the drama as a challenge for herself and elaborated, “Gye Jeol is someone who believes she is ordinary, incompetent, and timid, and that no one will ever love her. Despite these beliefs, she lives very bravely and then miraculously meets Kokdu. She gains hope and finds meaning in life through Kokdu, who loves Gye Jeol unconditionally.”
The two actors then picked key charms of each other’s characters, with Im Soo Hyang sharing, “It’ll be fun if you pay close attention to how Kokdu’s image changes moment by moment. After being dark one moment, he also closely follows Gye Jeol around like a puppy. If you watch from the side, he’s like Jim Carrey. You’ll be able to see a really wide variety of actor Kim Jung Hyun’s faces.”
Kim Jung Hyun continued, “Gye Jeol is someone with an unchanging loveliness. She’s a character with a pitiful past but she recovers right away and stands back up. Should I say it’s a lovable stubbornness?”
Lastly, the pair explained the message behind “Kokdu: Season of Deity.” Im Soo Hyang shared, “While chatting with the director before filming, I asked, ‘What’s the message you want to share through this drama?’ They picked one of Gye Jeol’s lines: ‘Kokdu, do you like yourself?’ Both Kokdu and Gye Jeol cannot wholeheartedly love themselves and feel hollow in one part of their hearts. This question felt like it was giving the answer ‘anyone has the right to be loved.'”
Kim Jung Hyun chimed in, “This is also a question that can be applied to every character that appears in the drama. They each overcome their insecurities and find real love. I hope it’s conveyed well so that viewers are able to relate.”
“Kokdu: Season of Deity” premieres on January 27 at 9:50 p.m. KST and the actors’ full interview and pictorial will be featured in the February issue of Singles Korea!
