Soompi & Viki Staff Talk: What Is Your Favorite K-Drama Bromance?
Welcome back to a new edition of the “Soompi & Viki Staff Talk”! This time, some of our staff members discuss our favorite K-drama bromances.
Here are our staff’s faves!

Somni: Lee Hwa Shin & Go Jung Won (“Don’t Dare to Dream”)
The legendary rom-com “Don’t Dare to Dream” (also known as “Jealousy Incarnate”) received lots of love and attention not only because of the chemistry between Jo Jung Suk and Gong Hyo Jin but also that of Jo Jung Suk and Go Kyung Pyo. Their bromance is my favorite in any K-drama by far! Although Lee Hwa Shin (Jo Jung Suk), Pyo Na Ri (Gong Hyo Jin), and Go Jung Won (Go Kyung Pyo) are entangled in a love triangle, due to the tight-knit friendship between Hwa Shin and Jung Won who can’t avoid each other, they create unprecedented comic scenes that are full of laughter and happy tears. I still remember the epic scene in which Hwa Shin and Jung Won fiercely fight each other over Na Ri in a mudflat while Na Ri is deeply immersed in clam digging and has no idea what is happening behind her. After going through the turbulent phases of love and hate, Hwa Shin and Jung Won open up their true feelings and make up to root for each other’s happiness.

Yeon: Kim Sung Ryong & Seo Yul (“Good Manager”)
My favorite K-drama bromance to this day would have to be the hilarious duo of Kim Sung Ryong (Namgoong Min) and Seo Yul (Lee Junho) in “Good Manager.” Working together at the same company, they never seem to get along with their completely opposite personalities and Seo Yul constantly being annoyed by Sung Ryong’s antics. However, their constant bickering eventually leads to an unexpected partnership and strong teamwork. Their love-hate relationship and amusing chemistry led to the actors even winning Best Couple at the 2017 KBS Drama Awards! What better proof of a great bromance?

Sehee: Park In Sung & Kim Sun Joo (“Unlock My Boss”)
The bromance in “Unlock My Boss” is quite different compared to what you would see in most other K-dramas. “Unlock My Boss” is a unique comedy thriller about Park In Sung (Chae Jong Hyeop), an unemployed job-seeker whose life changes after he picks up a smartphone that traps the soul of Kim Sun Joo (Park Sung Woong), the CEO of the big IT corporation Silver Lining. The bromance between the two characters is made special as they work together and achieve great teamwork through their differences in class and background, solving mysteries and running a company together.

Natalie: Kim Shin & Grim Reaper (“Guardian: The Lonely and Great God”)
There’s more to life than just Cinderella and Prince Charming, right? Life’s also about a lost goblin and a cold-hearted grim reaper who form a beautiful friendship…right? Whether you agree or not, you can’t deny that “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” (also known as “Goblin”) has the absolute best bromance duo, with the Goblin Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) and the Grim Reaper (Lee Dong Wook) showing off their insane chemistry that just flows out of the screen. The pair grows a distaste for one another as they begin cohabiting in Kim Shin’s house but soon develops a delicious love-hate relationship as they spend more time together and realize that they are more similar than they thought. Their quirky banter gives the drama a breeze of fresh air in the midst of its heavy plot. Also, Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook have stolen the hearts of many with their visual chemistry. Seyeon: Jang Geu Rae & Han Seok Yul (“Incomplete Life”)
My favorite K-drama bromance comes from the hit office drama “Incomplete life” (also known as “Misaeng”), which portrays Korean corporate life in a very realistic way. So-called “unqualified” intern Jang Geu Rae (Im Si Wan) is thrown into the corporate world with zero experience after failing to become a professional Go player. On the other hand, Han Seok Yul (Byun Yo Han) comes from a blue collar textile background and has a very friendly personality. The chemistry between these two very different characters provides some comedic relief to the show, keeping the drama from being too dark and making it much more enjoyable.

Ginny: Yoo Shi Jin & Seo Dae Young (“Descendants of the Sun”)
I have to say Song Joong Ki and Jin Goo in “Descendants of the Sun” had the greatest bromance chemistry of all K-drama bromances. Song Joong Ki plays Yoo Shi Jin, the captain of a Korean special forces unit, and Jin Goo plays fellow soldier Seo Dae Young. While they have their own respective romances going on, the two clearly show a solid friendship. Considering that they are in a war zone, they get stuck in unbelievable situations but manage to get out of it using their skills and amazing teamwork. It’s also hilarious to see how Seo Dae Young reacts to Yoo Shi Jin constantly poking fun at him. It’s a must-watch series with unforgettable bromance!

Winnie: Lee Young & Kim Byung Yeon (“Love in the Moonlight”)
Park Bo Gum and Kwak Dong Yeon played the roles of close friends in “Love in the Moonlight.” In the historical drama, palace guard Kim Byung Yeon (Kwak Dong Yeon) shows complete loyalty for Crown Prince Lee Young (Park Bo Gum), even making a major sacrifice to protect him, leading to a very emotional scene that stole my tears (and the actors’ tears as well according to interviews). Their bond has also extended beyond the drama, with the actors showing their long-lasting friendship and fun chemistry in the variety show “Young Actors’ Retreat” last year!

JJin: Cha Young Min & Go Seung Tak (“Ghost Doctor”)
My favorite K-drama bromance would have to be Rain and Kim Bum in “Ghost Doctor.” Cha Young Min (Rain) is a brilliant surgeon with “golden hands,” but he is also arrogant and selfish. Go Seung Tak (Kim Bum) is a genius when it comes to medical knowledge, but he has a fear of blood. A sudden accident turns Cha Young Min into a “coma ghost,” and his spirit continues to possess Go Seung Tak’s body. Their bromance is filled with lots of fun, sarcasm, and playfulness! It is amusing to see them go from genuinely hating each other to being literal soulmates. Additionally, they grow as individuals by building on each other’s strengths. Another reason to watch this drama is Kim Bum’s portrayal of Cha Young Min’s possession and the mystery surrounding their unanswered backstories!

Sala: Go Nam Soon & Park Heung Soo (“School 2013”)
It’s impossible to forget the legendary duo of Lee Jong Suk and Kim Woo Bin in “School 2013,” the fifth installment of the famous “School” series. In “School 2013,” Go Nam Soon (Lee Jong Suk) and Park Heung Soo (Kim Woo Bin) struggle to face various school-related issues involving bullying, academics, and friendships. At the start of the drama, Go Nam Soon and Park Heung Soo have a rocky relationship despite having once been close friends in the past. However, it quickly becomes very evident that they still care for each other deeply. Despite Park Heung Soo’s adamant refusal to accept Go Nam Soon back in his life, Go Nam Soon continues to express concern and affection, eventually worming his way back into Park Heung Soo’s life and rekindling their broken friendship. “School 2013” forgoes the typical romance subplot to focus on just the friendships between the students, and the cast’s portrayal really conveyed the raw emotions and tension between the characters. What makes the drama shine even more is the stellar acting and undeniable chemistry between Lee Jong Suk and Kim Woo Bin, with their real-life friendship also withstanding the test of time!
