Kang Hoon Describes Similarities With His Character In 'The Secret Romantic Guesthouse,' Cast's Close Chemistry, And More

Kang Hoon has dished on his upcoming role in “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse”!

Based on a hit web novel, SBS’s “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” is a mystery romance about an unconventional boarding house and three students who stay there as lodgers. Shin Ye Eun will star as Yoon Dan Oh, the owner of boarding house Yihwawon, while Ryeoun, Kang Hoon, and Jung Gun Joo will play three “flower scholars” who rent rooms—and are each hiding their own secrets.

Kang Hoon’s upcoming role will be as Kim Si Yeol, a liberal arts student who has more interest in having fun than studying for his exams. Despite his preference for a carefree and leisurely lifestyle, Kim Si Yeol never hesitates to speak up when he witnesses injustice.

On starring in another historical drama, Kang Hoon commented, “Although ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse’ is my third historical drama following ‘Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung’ and ‘The Red Sleeve,’ I think they are always difficult. For historical dramas, it’s often necessary to be careful with how you act and improvise after your lines. That’s why I’ve been researching more about the speech and etiquette of those times.”

To draw out his character even better, Kang Hoon described his process of bringing out his inner Kim Si Yeol. The actor elaborated, “I wanted to draw out Kim Si Yeol as a really free person. That’s why I analyzed the script first, and when I was done analyzing, I memorized the script without emotion to create everything on set. I attempted to try out a variety of things while discussing with the director as they came up.”

He then drew on his similarities to the character, saying, “When I’m with people I’m close with, I become an incredibly free person. I enjoy making others laugh and want to live happily and enjoyably.” However, he added, “I’m really shy so when there’s someone I’ve just met or someone I’m unfamiliar with, I become a quiet person. My tension is not always high like Kim Si Yeol.”

Kang Hoon also spoke about his fellow flower scholars, sharing, “Right from when I first heard the casting news, Ryeoun was like [his character] Kang San and Jung Gun Joo was like [his character] Jung Yoo Ha. I wanted to quickly meet them on set.”

Teasing the main cast’s chemistry, Kang Hoon said, “There was a time when that Jung Gun Joo and I were with the same agency so we were already close, and I’ve worked with Shin Ye Eun before so we were close. Throughout filming, I’ve gotten really close with Ryeoun. We’re around the same age and everyone has such great energy so we’re always filming within a good atmosphere.”

Kang Hoon added, “When doing historical dramas, there tends to be a lot of characters, and scenes where I work with my seniors, so I think I’m learning a lot from that. I’ve received a ton of help from In Gyo Jin and Lee Mi Do, who always sincerely ponder and respond to my questions.”

The drama’s producers shared, “Kang Hoon sported Kim Si Yeol’s tension as soon as he got to set and he’s a vitamin-like actor who raises the energy levels on set. Please wait for the first broadcast of ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse,’ which will highlight Kang Hoon’s bright acting transformation.”

SBS’s “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” will premiere on March 20 at 10 p.m. KST and will be available on Viki!
