Yuju Elaborates On The Meaning Behind Her Recent Comeback With 'O' And 'Without U'

Yuju has dished about her recent comeback with Singles magazine!

On “O,” her first album in over a year, Yuju shared, “There’s a double meaning in the album’s theme of ‘vacation.’ Rather than being a reason to get on a plane and go on a trip, it begins with the thought that the individual lives we live are like road trips. The flow of our emotions that goes round and round on our individual journeys created the round shape of my album title ‘O.'”

Yuju confirmed that “O” is meant to be read like the letter and elaborated, “Most of the time, we use words or phrases to decide on album titles, but this time, I visualized the journey back which added the fun of letting the viewer imagine the double meaning of ‘zero.’ Every person is different in the way they look to the way they think. Instead of sharing a definitive shape that I decided on and said ‘this is it,’ I wanted to pursue diversity that can create meaning separately or together, depending on the point of view.”

Describing the story behind her title track “Without U,” Yuju commented, “‘Without U’ is being said to someone you can’t be without. To one person, it could be the person they love, but it could also be one’s parents or friends. I wrote the lyrics while comparing the subject of ‘you’ to music. As I’ve focused on one field of work up until now, without the experience of changing careers, the time I’ve spent with music has been the longest.”

The interviewer mentioned how Yuju’s B-sides are very reminiscent of friendships, to which Yuju responded, “That’s why you may feel like you aren’t alone, even if this is a trip you’ve gone on by yourself. While trips typically have company, there are times when you don’t, so each track makes you think of a variety of situations.”
