Get ready for the premiere of upcoming sci-fi drama “Duty After School”!

Based on a hit webtoon, TVING’s upcoming sci-fi drama “Duty After School” tells the story of high school students who are called upon to join the world’s first war against extraterrestrial forces. When mysterious alien spheres start invading the world, the Department of Defense offers college admission incentives to get the students to sign up for the reserved forces, and they soon become frontline fighters.

Ahead of the drama’s premiere later this week, TVING has shared three intriguing points that will allow viewers to enjoy “Duty After School” even more!

Reinforcing originality through genre, worldview, and character variation

The trustworthy producers of “Duty After School” will complete the drama by maximizing the thrill viewers feel from the genre. “Duty After School” is a collaboration between director Sung Yong Il of “Mr. Temporary” and rookie writer Yoon Soo, with writer Lee Nam Kyu of “Radiant” joining as the drama’s creator.

The drama’s originality is also an unforgettable key point through its expansion of one’s worldview by exploring different possibilities, character variations, and the visual representation of mysterious alien spheres. In particular, the representation of the unidentified alien spheres will interest fans of both the drama and the original webtoon. The medium alien spheres in the sky will maintain their original size from the webtoon but will be revamped with new details. In the case of the small alien spheres, they will be made smaller which allows for easy movement and spectacular scenes that have a sense of urgency.

Another focus was making sure that the students’ military uniforms were not much different in color and design from their school uniforms. Director Sung Yong Il commented, “We tried to explain the background of the spheres and their true states in greater detail than the original. If possible, our greatest goal was making sure the art and prop aspects looked real.”

The novel synergy between rookie soldiers Shin Hyun Soo, Lee Soon Won, and Im Se Mi

“Duty After School” will highlight the diverse personalities of the soldiers diligently portrayed by Shin Hyun Soo, Lee Soon Won, Im Se Mi, and more. At the core of the story are the students in their final year of high school who are thrown into a survival arena overnight. As they come to participate in the world’s first war against extraterrestrial forces, the performance of student soldiers Kim Ki Hae, Choi Moon Hee, Kim Su Gyeom, Yeo Joo Ha, Lee Yeon, Kwon Eun Bin, Moon Sang Min, Woo Min Kyu, and more will be more important than ever. To add on to the group’s chemistry, Shin Hyun Soo, Lee Soon Won, and Im Se Mi will be the adults who lead the children.

The director shared, “I wanted to create the rebirth [of ‘Duty After School’] as a ‘multi-character show’ by emphasizing and strengthening the charms of the students in a more detailed manner. You will be able to see children’s true participation in war as they attempt to survive in their own ways.”

Writer Lee Nam Kyu continued, “We paid a lot of attention to the actors’ synchronization. It’s quite good. If you’re a fan who read the webtoon, you will be satisfied.”

The new world of a never-before-seen Korean school war drama

“Duty After School” has already made a name for itself by being a war drama about students. Through the unique alien spheres, the webtoon’s original writer described students’ ambiguous situation of having to study, go to college, and take their CSATs (South Korea’s annual college entrance exam) without having a dream or goal, which director Sung Yong Il agreed with.

Lee Nam Kyu elaborated, “The drama’s main characters are students and also soldiers. In other words, incomplete humans and completed humans had to co-exist. I wrote with the thought that it would be nice if the image of the children thinking and maturing within that was portrayed well.”

Writer Yoon Soo elaborated, “12th grade students, who are very regular and should be protected, end up holding guns against their own will as they’re pushed by adults. This drama’s charm is not a catharsis from victory but rather the vivid depiction of the students’ desperate survival and growth as they fight without knowing who they are fighting.”

To conclude, Lee Nam Kyu added, “Depending on the person watching, the genre could change from a creature drama, school drama, war drama, growth drama, and more. But what’s most important is fun. I hope you enjoy.” Yoon Soo shared, “I think you will simultaneously feel support and pity as you watch the transformation of the characters who overcome conflict and enmity in a crisis and end up protecting each other.”

“Duty After School” is set to premiere on March 31 and will be available on Viki.
