Although Yi Yeon found a happy ending with Nam Ji Ah (Jo Bo Ah) in Season 1, he will get swept up in an unexpected incident and get summoned to the year of 1938. The new season will depict Yi Yeon’s desperate struggle to return to present day where all the people precious to him are.

With the premiere quickly approaching, here are three reasons you should look forward to “Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938”!

The return of gumiho Yi Yeon…in year 1938

Last season, Yi Yeon overcame the risk of death and found a happy ending with his “forever first love” Nam Ji Ah. However, a new story will unfold as he gets tangled in an inexplainable case that takes him all the way back to the year 1938. Previously, “Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” producing director Kang Shin Hyo explained that they debated whether Season 2 should focus on Yi Yeon’s past, present, or future. They added, “This time we wanted to show the expansion of Yi Yeon as a mountain god. That’s why we decided to send him to the time period when he most neglected his duties as a mountain god and the time period with the people who needed his help the most.”

As Yi Yeon is forced onto a new “stage” that’s part of a larger universe, viewers can look forward to seeing his battles against new  mountain gods, native gods, and foreign monsters ravaging the land. With a Japanese monster who wishes to eradicate hope in Joseon and Yi Yeon who wishes to eradicate despair in his nation, who will come out on top?

The powerful synergy between Lee Dong Wook, Kim So Yeon, Kim Bum, and Ryu Kyung Soo

The greatest key point of “Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938” is the chemistry between the drama’s unique characters who will exceed expectations. While Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum will return to their roles as gumiho brothers Yi Yeon and Yi Rang, Kim So Yeon and Ryu Kyung Soo will bring a different energy as they newly join the cast.

Lee Dong Wook teased, “The intensity and scale of action [scenes] have increased. There will be action from other mountain gods and you will be able to feel catharsis from that.” Kim So Yeon, who plays mountain goddess Ryu Hong Joo, chimed in, “Please pay attention to the characters’ new relationships.”

Kim Bum commented, “I hope you look forward to [the drama] lots as it features the historical background of all humans and monsters in 1938, as well as action and a universe that have been upgraded.” He added, “There are scenes where Yi Rang changes. I hope you look forward to [seeing] what kind of image it will be.”

Ryu Kyung Soo portrays Cheon Moo Young, Yi Yeon’s longtime friend and a former mountain god of the north. The actor confidently shared, “We will give ‘Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938’ viewers a variety of spectacular sights. I believe that we will give you a good experience this May.”

More powerful villains

Fitting for the expanded universe, Yi Yeon will now have to face more powerful villains and a wider array of characters. Hwang Hee returns as gumiho Koo Shin Joo, Yi Yeon’s loyal friend who’s been by his side for centuries. Kim Yong Ji will take on the role of Seonwoo Eun Ho, an undercover independence activist. Although the actress appeared in Season 1 as Ki Yu Ri, she will now show a different charm in a completely new role. Also returning are Kim Jung Nan as Taluipa, the owner of the Afterlife Immigration Office, and Ahn Kil Kang as her husband Hyun Ui Ong. Kim Soo Jin will return as Bok Hae Ja, a boutique owner who is really the mythical “Snail Bride” working as Yi Yeon’s assistant.

Several new faces have also joined the cast, including Ha Do Kwon as Ryuhei Kato, the director of the Government-General’s police department. Jo Dal Hwan will transform into Yi Rang’s right-hand man Bu Du Mok, while Woo Hyun Jin portrays mermaid Jang Yeo Hee who gets tied up with both Yi Yeon and Yi Rang.

Additionally, Kim Joo Young, Kim Na Hyun, and Kang Na Eon play entertainers at Ryu Hong Joo’s top-scale restaurant, while Han Gun Yoo plays Ryu Hong Joo’s bodyguard. Lim Ji Ho will take on the role of Akira Saito, a police chief of the Government-General’s security department.
