On the latest episode of “The King of Mask Singer,” “Rock Star” surprised the audience by turning out to be an idol!

During the May 7 broadcast of the MBC singing competition, four contestants advanced to the next round in their quest for the throne.

In the first match-up of Round 2, Rock Star wowed the crowd with a powerful rendition of Kim Kwang Seok’s “I Loved You, But…”

After watching the performance, some of the celebrity panelists guessed that Rock Star was a trot singer and praised him for his skillful singing.

Rock Star won the round with 82 votes to his opponent’s 17, enabling him to move on to Round 3—where he sang a soulful cover of trot singer Kim Sang Bae’s “No, No.”

Although Rock Star impressed the audience with his performance, he ultimately lost the round to his opponent.

When the masked singer took off his mask to reveal his identity, everyone was shocked to learn that he was none other than Super Junior’s Sungmin, who is currently gearing up to make his debut as a trot singer on May 10.

Explaining why he’d decided to tackle a new genre of music, Sungmin shared, “I’ve been an idol for many years now, and I’ve been singing and performing for a long time. I’m a fan of Na Hoon-a, and seeing him continue to sing and receive love for a long time, I thought to myself that I wanted to become like that too. So I thought about what I could do to make that happen, and I wound up studying trot.”

When asked what was hardest about switching genres, Sungmin replied, “I was shocked by how differently [trot singers] create sounds. The way you pronounce and vocalize words is entirely different, so it felt like I had to forget everything I knew [about singing] and start learning from scratch.”
