Based on the hit web novel of the same name, SBS’s “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” is a mystery romance drama about an unconventional boarding house and three students who stay there as lodgers. Shin Ye Eun stars as Yoon Dan Oh, the owner of boarding house Yihwawon, while Ryeoun, Kang Hoon, and Jung Gun Joo play three “flower scholars” who rent rooms—and are each hiding their own secrets.
The drama aired its finale on May 16 and garnered an average nationwide viewership rating of 5.0 percent, ending its run on a personal best!
Following the conclusion of “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse,” main cast members Shin Ye Eun, Ryeoun, Kang Hoon, and Jung Gun Joo shared their closing comments.
Shin Ye Eun, who starred as Yihwawon’s owner Yoon Dan Oh, shared, “I remember feeling so sad to part ways with the actors and staff on the day of our last filming, so I can’t believe that the time has now come to send off Yoon Dan Oh along with the finale. If i face difficult moments in the future, I think I’ll gain strength by looking back on the moments I lived as Yoon Dan Oh. That’s how full it is of precious memories I’m grateful for. I’m thankful to have met Yoon Dan Oh and to everyone I worked with.”
When asked to pick her favorite scene, Shin Ye Eun specifically chose scene 45 in Episode 9 where Kang San (Ryeoun) states, “You are the end of my memories that do not hurt to think about.” She elaborated, “I really like this line that feels like becoming an important person to someone else and becoming a precious person. I was happy while filming, and if someone were to ask me to describe this drama with one line, I’d say this line from Episode 9 Scene 45.”
Lastly, Shin Ye Eun added, “After seeing viewers feel the same emotions and have the same thoughts as I did when I first read the script, I thought, ‘I’m collaborating and working with viewers right now.’ Thank you for being with and supporting ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse’ with the same heart from Episode 1 to the finale. Thanks to you all, Yoon Dan Oh was able to shine even lovelier.”
Yoon Dan Oh’s love interest Kang San was portrayed by Ryeoun, who was also the dethroned crown prince Lee Seol. The actor commented, “I felt very sad even after filming ended, but now it really feels like the project is finished. I don’t know if that’s why, but I feel very sad and regretful.” Ryeoun picked the ending of Episode 10 as the most memorable scene, explaining that it felt impactful for Kang San and Kim Si Yeol (Kang Hoon) to meet as Kang San and a guard.
Ryeoun concluded, “While there was everything from joy and difficulties throughout the filming of ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse,’ I think each and every moment became valuable experience. In the future too, I will greet you with a good project and image so please watch over me.”
Reflecting on his role as Kim Si Yeol, Kang Hoon shared, “I feel incredibly regretful that ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse,’ which I filmed really diligently over the past eight or so months, is awaiting the finale. I’m not sure why, but after the broadcasts began, I think time went by faster than usual. I want to thank viewers who loved ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse,’ and I was really happy to act as Kim Si Yeol. It was an honor to work with a good director, writer, all our staff members, my seniors, and colleagues.”
Kang Hoon picked his character’s identity reveal scene in Episode 10 as the most memorable, explaining, “This was the scene I was looking forward to most while preparing for filming. It was the moment where Kim Si Yeol’s identity was finally revealed after Kang San and Jung Yoo Ha [Jung Gun Joo], and it was a scene I pondered a lot for because Kim Si Yeol’s line was so powerful in the midst of a vaguely predictable situation.”
The actor concluded, “Thanks to the love and support from so many people, our drama was able to shine. While ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse’ has come to an end, I hope this project is remembered as a good project that everyone can occasionally bring out to watch.”
Jung Gun Joo, who portrayed Jung Yoo Ha, commented, “Filming began when it was hot and concluded when it was cold. That’s how much it’s a project in which the efforts of all the actors and staff are melted in. I prepared with a lot of thoughts, stress, and worries regarding Jung Yoo Ha, but now that the broadcast is concluding, I thought, ‘I’ve grown quite attached during this time.'”
On the drama’s best scene, Jung Gun Joo chose the part in Episode 16 where Jung Yoo Ha dies instead of Kang San. He elaborated, “I acted with the idea that I was at the end of Jung Yoo Ha’s life.” Finally, Jung Gun Joo shared, “I sincerely thank you for watching ‘The Secret Romantic Guesthouse’ up until now. In the future, I, Jung Gun Joo, will seek you out with another good project. Please look forward to it lots.”
