Ji Chang Wook And Shin Hye Sun Radiate Warmth Behind The Scenes Of “Welcome To Samdalri”
JTBC’s upcoming drama “Welcome to Samdalri” has shared an adorable new glimpse of its leads behind the scenes of filming!
Helmed by “When the Camellia Blooms” director Cha Young Hoon and penned by Kwon Hye Joo of “Hi, Bye Mama,” “Welcome to Samdalri” is a new romance drama starring Ji Chang Wook as Jo Yong Pil, a man who has faithfully stayed in his hometown on Jeju Island all his life in order to protect its residents. Shin Hye Sun will star as Jo Sam Dal, who grew up together with Jo Yong Pil as his close childhood friend.
Unlike Yong Pil, who was content to remain in his hometown of Samdalri, Sam Dal made it her mission to get out of their small town and move to Seoul. In order to chase her dream of becoming a photographer, Sam Dal gritted her teeth and toiled away as an assistant in the cutthroat fashion industry—and after years of hard work, she finally made it to the top under the new name Jo Eun Hye. However, when everything she’s worked so hard to build comes crashing down in the blink of an eye, she is forced to return to Samdalri.
The director and writer behind “Welcome to Samdalri” unveiled their initial intention when they planned for the drama—to spotlight the ambiguous phase of individuals around the age of forty. These are people who find themselves caught between being embarrassed to label themselves as youth yet feeling like they still lack the profound maturity associated with full-fledged adulthood. While others may perceive them as achievers with honors tied to their names, in reality, they are grappling with the challenge of not losing what they have, often feeling breathless while doing so. The drama aspires to impart the wisdom of haenyeo (female divers) to these people, urging them, “Don’t be greedy; just endure as much as your breath allows. And when you can’t endure anymore, resurface to the waters where you began and take a breath.”
Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun also shared their experience of working with both the director and the writer, emphasizing the warmth they felt. They expressed, “The director is warm and has great empathy, so much so that he laughs and cries with us on set. Perhaps that’s why the director’s works also exude such warmth. The writer provides a lot of support and pays meticulous attention to the actors’ opinions, which in turn breathe life into the characters and make their chemistry more alive. We place great reliance on the director and writer, whose warmth perfectly complements the heartwarming drama.”
The production team stated, “In order to create a drama that can prompt viewers to reminisce about the preciousness of their roots, the value of things lost in the past, and relationships with friends that have been forgotten over time, director Cha Young Hoon, writer Kwon Hye Joo, and all the actors and staff are pouring their warm energy into this project. We ask for your expectations for ‘Welcome to Samdalri,’ a series that will bring warmth to your winter.”
“Welcome to Samdalri” will premiere on December 2 at 10:30 p.m. KST. In the meantime, check out a teaser here!
