Lee Je Hoon Dishes On His Character And Reason For Starring In 'Chief Detective 1958'

Lee Je Hoon has dished on his upcoming drama “Chief Detective 1958”!

“Chief Detective 1958” will serve as a prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which ran for 18 years from 1971 to 1989 and achieved an incredible peak of 70 percent ratings back in its heyday. While the original show was set in the 1970s and 1980s (present day at the time), “Chief Detective 1958” will be set even earlier, in 1958.

The drama will follow the story of Park Young Han (Lee Je Hoon), a passionate detective who boasts the highest arrest rate when it comes to petty thieves, as he teams up with three charismatic colleagues to break the norms of corruption.

The newly released stills depict countryside detective Park Young Han making a great transformation into Jongnam Police Station’s detective. With a huge bag in tow while leaving the Hwangcheon police station, Park Young Han’s gaze is filled with passion and ambition to achieve his dream.

Another still captivates with Park Young Han’s new steps into the unfamiliar city of Seoul. Wearing a clean-cut suit, Park Young Han has a thousand-watt smile. On the flip side, while interrogating evil, Park Young Han exudes charisma with a serious facial expression.

Regarding his reason for starring in the drama, Lee Je Hoon shared, “The biggest [reason] was my great anticipation and curiosity for the prequel of ‘Chief Inspector.’ It’s also an honor to be able to participate in the story of a project that received love from the entire nation to the extent that it broadcast for 18 years. I thought that if it was revealed how detective Park Young Han and the chief investigation team members met and how the people of that time period looked at the world, the people who remembered ‘Chief Inspector’ would enjoy it.”

He continued, “Park Young Han is a very innocent character whose passion and tenacity for catching the criminal is stronger than anyone else, and he is a young man with a passionate heart.”

The actor further used a phrase that means “retaliating strongly against the strong and being weak for the weak” to describe his character. Lee Je Hoon explained, “He works hard to capture the criminals while trying to empathize with the victims and being more heartbroken than anyone else like the people involved in the case and their families. Although he may seem simple-minded and reckless, I felt proud and thought that it was amazing that he put himself on the line [to catch criminals].” Lee Je Hoon continued, “I got the thought, ‘If there are lots of detectives like this in real life, I could live with less worries,’ and, ‘The existence of police themselves can be comfort and strength.'”

“Chief Detective 1958” will premiere on April 19 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
