5 Times Byeon Woo Seok Tries To Get Closer To Kim Hye Yoon In Episodes 5-6 Of "Lovely Runner"
In this week’s episodes of “Lovely Runner” we are still seeing Im Sol (Kim Hye Yoon) try her best to change things for the better for the sake of Ryu Sun Jae (Byeon Woo Seok). As her sense of urgency is even greater now that she knows he was the one who saved her life before, she is taking every chance she gets to change his past. However, this time around Sun Jae takes on a more active role in order to approach her and win her heart, which ends up with him gifting us some of the most satisfying and sweet moments so far, so let’s review five of the best of those moments!
Warning: spoilers from episodes 5-6 ahead!
1. Accepting Im Sol’s gestures of friendship
Although Ryu Sun Jae has made it clear on several occasions that he isn’t really interested in Im Sol as a friend (because he is in love with her), he ends up giving up and accepting every little gesture she shows to him. She gives him a time capsule as a gift, something she plans in hopes to give him a reason to avoid death until the moment they retrieve it. She also takes him to the movies in order for him to avoid watching a swimming competition, something that could trigger him after retiring as a swimmer.
Sun Jae isn’t oblivious to the efforts she makes to cheer him up; however, Im Sol is way too focus on trying to save his life in the future that she is completely unaware of his feelings for her. She’s missing the chance to really develop a relationship and give him a better past instead of a better future. But this isn’t exactly a surprise either, since to her, Ryu Sun Jae isn’t only her next-door neighbor. He is her ultimate bias, and therefore thinking about him liking her is almost impossible, as she also doesn’t really remember their first encounter and doesn’t know she is in fact his first love.
2. Helping Im Sol whenever she needs it
Just as Sol can’t seem to stop her intents to try to change Sun Jae’s future, he can’t help himself but to be concerned when it comes to something related to her. Even when he tries his best to appear indifferent and unaffected by her mere presence, his feelings come to the surface plain and clear for everybody except for Sol, that is. It’s something as simple as giving her his uniform tie and accepting a punishment at school, or helping her ride a bike for the first time. Whenever she needs him, he is there for her.
This all would be almost too perfect if it weren’t for the fact that Kim Tae Sung (Song Geon Hee), Sol’s alleged boyfriend, continues to meddle between them. He isn’t exactly ruining things for our main leads, but he is indeed an obstacle for them, as Sol doesn’t really want to disregard the feelings of her past self, and Sun Jae is too much of a nice guy to try to steal her from his side. After all, it is true that the Im Sol from the past is in love with Kim Tae Sung.
3. Asking Im Sol to break up with Kim Tae Sung
However, this all changes when Sun Jae sees an opportunity to give Sol a new cell phone after she lost hers in the river. He decides to take the stage for the first time with Eclipse, the band he and Baek In Hyuk (Lee Seung Hyub) formed in the first timeline. Seeing him on stage brings back all the feelings Sol has for him and makes her remember why she so desperately wants to save his life, something that also backfires, as it brings her fears and a sense of urgency once again. With that state of mind, she practically begs him to only think about himself and to forget about her.
What Sol doesn’t expect is that by asking him to do that, she is pushing him all the more to approach her. So, he takes the courage and tells her to break up for good with Kim Tae Sung, as Sun Jae also knows that he doesn’t really have feelings for her. And while Sun Jae is making this bold move, Im Sol gets to hear the recording in which he confesses his feelings, something she couldn’t remember due to her drunken state the first time. Overwhelmed by the shock of these confessions, all she can do is flee from there, leaving a bewildered Sun Jae behind.
4. Acting cool around Im Sol and flirting with her
To Sun Jae’s satisfaction, Sol actually breaks up with Kim Tae Sung once she finds out he really doesn’t have any feelings for Sol of the past, though later on Tae Sung starts to realize that he is also slowly falling in love with her. But Sun Jae doesn’t miss his chance and starts to approach Sol in a bolder way, openly flirting with her but without forgetting his friend’s advice to not look too interested, which turns him into a cute but total mess.
So much is his determination to win her heart that he even accepts her older brother’s nagging and ends up passed out on the street after accidentally drinking some rice wine, interpreting that she was sad about her breakup. Seeing as being subtle isn’t exactly his forte, he asks Sol out on a date to watch the olympic games together and cheer on the Korean team, which will provide him the perfect chance to make Sol’s heart – and everyone’s for that matter – flutter once again.
5. Finally confessing his feelings to Sol
Taking on the precious opportunity he has been building up so far, Sun Jae uses the victory of the Korean team to bring Sol aside and finally open up his heart, giving one of the most heartfelt love confessions one can ever dream to receive. He declares that ever since he met her, even those rainy days he used to hate so much have turned into something meaningful to him. However, right at that moment he gets a call from none other than Kim Tae Sung, who informs them that Sol’s mom is at the hospital getting ready for a surgery.
And though it is clear Sol really loves Sun Jae, she breaks his heart by rejecting him, as she perhaps sees it as the best choice. Since she still doesn’t know when or how she will go back to the future, nor if her actions so far will actually prevent his death, she has to figure out many things from the past, especially in regards to the accident that nearly kills her. It looks like we are still on for a long and emotional journey with Sol and Sun Jae, so let’s continue watching and rooting for this couple in next week’s episodes of “Lovely Runner”!
