3 Moments We're Still Thinking About From Episode 5 Of "Good Partner"
Her daughter, career, and public image — these are all at stake for divorce attorney Cha Eun Kyung (Jang Nara) now that her impending divorce and husband’s affair have become the hot topic in the news and the center of office gossip. The most recent episode of “Good Partner” brought viewers a sweet confession in the countryside, a secret revealed, and more.
While waiting patiently (well, as much as possible) for the next episode to be released, here are three memorable moments from episode five that we’ll be thinking about in the meantime.
Warning: episode 5 spoilers ahead!
1. Yu Ri finds out Attorney Jung’s secret
Last week, an outrageous counterclaim was made against Eun Kyung’s divorce case. The claim was that she already had an “office husband” before her husband’s affair. This so-called office husband is said to be Attorney Jung Woo Jin (Kim Joon Han). Eun Kyung’s husband actually thought her having an affair was unlikely, but Choi Sa Ra (Han Jae Yi) convinced him that Eun Kyung had a relationship with Attorney Jung way before anything between them started.
Eun Kyung is not surprisingly flabbergasted to hear this accusation and quickly clarifies to her attorney and office frenemy, Han Yu Ri (Nam Ji Hyun), that she has never had a romantic relationship with Attorney Jung. But ironically, thanks to Eun Kyung’s advice to always be skeptical when it comes to affairs, Yu Ri isn’t so easily convinced. Walking in on Attorney Jung and Eun Kyung standing oddly close in the office just fuels the flame, even though the misunderstanding is immediately cleared up moments later — Eun Kyung cut her finger, and Attorney Jung was just trying to help.
Attorney Jung goes out for a meal with Yu Ri to clarify his relationship with Eun Kyung, during which he explains his past with Eun Kyung and how he has always admired her throughout his career. He says they are only longtime friends and colleagues, but Yu Ri catches onto something behind his explanation.
Despite being the victim of a false claim and facing scrutiny from the firm’s CEO and others, Attorney Jung has only been worried about Eun Kyung and clearing her name. Even when Eun Kyung apologizes for getting him involved in her case, he says there isn’t a reason to apologize and that he is willing to hold a press conference to clear things up.
Attorney Jung thinks he has cleared things up with Yu Ri until she asks him to keep his love for Eun Kyung hidden during her divorce! He’s taken aback, thinking there has been a misunderstanding in his explanation, but Yu Ri could be onto something. Has she actually figured out his true feelings behind his denial? Even though an office affair may be a false claim, it really does seem like there’s something potentially romantic behind Attorney Jung’s care for Eun Kyung. Either way, Yu Ri requests he keep his distance so he does not affect Eun Kyung’s case. Even though it hurts, it makes sense.
2. Eun Ho makes a sweet confession to Yu Ri
Outside of dealing with Eun Kyung’s escalating case, Yu Ri is tasked with heading to the countryside to handle a divorce case. Unfortunately for Yu Ri, she’s assigned to go with Attorney Jeon Eun Ho (P.O), whom she’s been awkward with ever since their unexpected one-night stand after drinking too much.
It’s a maze to get to the couple’s home in the countryside, so Yu Ri and Eun Ho walk together and get directions from the locals. Complete with a familiar trip-and-hug scene, the two share lots of adorably awkward moments together along the way. It’s truly a nice break from the divorce chaos going on back at the office.
When they finally find the home, they have to deal with a married couple trying to get out of their legal fees. The otherwise sweet couple used their divorce case as a way to pay their debt, but Yu Ri asks Eun Ho to let them off easy because of the couple’s heartfelt love story and financial struggles. After bidding goodbye to the couple, they find a place to have dinner before the return drive. It’s here that they finally talk about “that night.”
Eun Ho takes the initiative and suggests to Yu Ri that they should give dating a try. Eun Ho confesses it wasn’t just a one-night stand to him: he has real feelings for Yu Ri. Though Eun Ho makes every effort to convince Yu Ri there’s nothing wrong or complicated with giving it a shot and simply getting to know each other better, Yu Ri insists it’s not a good idea. She says she wants to focus on her career, and her negative experiences with divorce have given her a cynical outlook on marriage and relationships in general. However, Yu Ri may be getting a change of perspective after seeing the countryside couple in love and another happy old couple later after dinner. There may be hope for Eun Ho after all.
3. Sa Ra secretly meets Eun Kyung’s daughter
Episode five ended on yet another killer cliffhanger that’s making waiting for the next episode even harder. Eun Kyung gets a call that would be scary for any parent or family member: she’s told that her daughter has disappeared from school.
In the next scene, Eun Kyung rushes into a cafe to see her daughter sitting across from Sa Ra. So far, Eun Kyung has done her best to maintain a serious, unaffected persona in front of her coworkers and the press, but this is the first time she’s really shown her anger in public, and for good reason.
Whether Sa Ra got permission from Eun Kyung’s husband to watch their daughter isn’t clear yet, but either way, it seems wildly inappropriate and out of touch considering their current divorce case. Not letting Eun Kyung know where her daughter is going to be is definitely a big issue, and hopefully it comes up in court!
