Cha Joo Young, Lee Hyun Wook, And More Engage In A Fierce Acting Showdown At Script Reading For "The Queen Who Crowns"
tvN has shared a sneak peek of its upcoming historical drama “The Queen Who Crowns”!
On November 28, “The Queen Who Crowns” revealed photos of its cast members at the script reading held last September. Director Kim Sang Ho, writer Lee Young Mi, and cast members Cha Joo Young, Lee Hyun Wook, Lee Yi Dam, Lee Si Ah, Choi Deok Moon, Park Yong Woo, Han Seung Won, Kim Woo Dam, Park Ji Il, So Hee Jung, Jung Eui Soon, Kim Jung, Song Jae Ryong, and Hwang Young Hee were in attendance.
“The Queen Who Crowns” tells the story about the fiery life of Queen Won Kyung, a kingmaker who dreamed of a new world in the early Joseon Dynasty and made her husband Lee Bang Won a king with whom she shared the power of the throne. Although she was recorded in historical records only as “King Taejong’s wife” or “Mrs. Min” without her full name, the drama sheds light on Queen Won Kyung, who lived an independent life without losing herself despite devastating betrayals and harsh reality.
Cha Joo Young takes on the role of Queen Won Kyung, making her first foray into historical dramas. She deeply immersed herself in the character from her first line, portraying a queen who dreamed of a new world. The production team noted that the actress brought to life the multifaceted nature of a resolute and strong-willed woman with a calm yet dignified manner of speaking and charismatic eyes.
Lee Hyun Wook plays Taejong Lee Bang Won, the third king of Joseon and the man who bears the weight of the crown. Lee Hyun Wook showcased a compelling blend of good and evil as he portrayed the goal-oriented king who seizes power by marrying the upper class woman Won Kyung.
The drama also highlights the intense performances of the women who start to reveal their hidden desires as Yi Bang Won takes in concubines to pressure Won Kyung. Lee Yi Dam plays Chae Ryeong, the queen’s maid who becomes one of the king’s concubines. Lee Yi Dam’s portrayal of a character who balances between Won Kyung and Bang Won with cunning and flirtation hidden behind an innocent face is chilling.
Lee Si Ah takes on the role of Yeong Sil, a concubine carrying the king’s child, and masterfully expresses extreme emotions. With her stunning beauty and her use of the prince to wield power, Yeong Sil pressures Won Kyung and shakes the intense narrative of the royal couple.
Additionally, the drama features Choi Deok Moon and Park Yong Woo as Joseon officials Ha Ryun and Yi Sook Beon, Han Seung Won and Kim Woo Dam as Won Kyung’s brothers Min Moo Gu and Min Moo Jil, Park Ji Il as Won Kyung’s father Min Je, So Hee Jung as the head court lady Mrs. Jeong, Jung Eui Soon as the chief court lady of the queen’s quarters Mrs. Seo, Kim Jung as the chief court lady of the king’s quarters Mrs. Kim, Song Jae Ryong as the blind fortune teller Pan Su, and Hwang Young Hee as the shaman.
The production team remarked, “The appearance of each character created incredible energy. The intense performances of the actors clashing with each other were overwhelming. From the first script reading, we were confident that we would create a fantastic project with these vivid characters.”
“The Queen Who Crowns” is set to premiere on January 6 at 8:50 p.m. KST. Stay tuned!
