Lee Si Ah And Lee Yi Dam Dish On Portraying Concubines In Upcoming Drama “The Queen Who Crowns”
Lee Yi Dam and Lee Si Ah have shared their thoughts on their characters in the upcoming drama “The Queen Who Crowns”!
“The Queen Who Crowns” tells the story of Queen Wongyeong (Cha Joo Young), a kingmaker who dreamed of a new world in the early days of the Joseon dynasty and made her husband, Lee Bang Won (Lee Hyun Wook), a king with whom she shared the power of the throne. Although she was described in historical records only as “King Taejong’s wife” or “Mrs. Min” without her full name, the drama will reimagine history from the perspective of Queen Wongyeong, who lived an independent life without losing herself in spite of devastating betrayals and harsh reality.
Lee Yi Dam plays Chae Ryeong, Wongyeong’s former maid who becomes the king’s concubine after catching his attention. Lee Si Ah stars as Yeong Sil, a royal concubine who bore the king’s child.
The released stills capture the changed attitudes of Chae Ryeong and Yeong Sil, who have become King Bang Won’s concubines. They also pique viewers’ curiosity about how the two will shake up the relationship between Wongyeong and Bang Won.
Talking about her character, Lee Yi Dam shared, “I think Chae Ryeong possesses a different kind of strength compared to Wongyeong. While she may falter when things change suddenly, she has an excellent ability to recover and adapt.”
On how she portrayed the character of Chae Ryeong, who transitions from being the queen’s handmaid to a concubine favored by the king, Lee Yi Dam revealed, “From the beginning to the end, I focused on the emotional relationship with Wongyeong, as it was the most crucial aspect. The relationship shifts from one of trust, almost like family, to something worse than strangers, which required deep contemplation.”
Describing her character, Lee Si Ah shared, “Yeong Sil is a woman carrying the king’s child. She genuinely loves Bang Won and considers him her entire world. She also has a strong determination to win him over.” The released stills capture all facets of Yeong Sil.
On preparing for the role of Yeong Sil, who was originally an ally of Wongyeong but becomes her rival upon entering the palace as a concubine, Lee Si Ah explained, “I worked hard to portray both her maternal instincts and her desperate love for one man in an authentic way.”
She also mentioned that she paid special attention to her costumes and makeup. She explained, “I used pastel tones for Yeong Sil’s outfits to differentiate her from Wongyeong. I also tried to create a contrast between the characters by using a cleaner makeup look.”
Finally, both actresses expressed their hopes for viewers to notice the emotional depth of their performances. Lee Yi Dam encouraged viewers to focus on the complex relationships of the characters. Lee Si Ah concluded, “I hope viewers enjoy the intense energy that emerges from the fierce emotional battles.”
“The Queen Who Crowns” will premiere on January 6 at 8:50 p.m. KST.
