Jinyoung Shares How He Crafted His “The Witch” Character, Working With Roh Jeong Eui, And More
Jinyoung has shared more insights on his role in Channel A’s upcoming drama “The Witch”!
Based on “Moving” author Kang Full’s webtoon, “The Witch” is a mystery romance that follows the story of Mi Jeong (Roh Jeong Eui), a woman known as the “witch” who was chased away from a village after all the men who fell in love with her died, and Dong Jin (GOT7’s Jinyoung), a man who tries to rescue her from the mysterious pattern of death.
Marking his return after completing military service, Jinyoung takes on the role of Dong Jin, a top-tier data miner. During his high school years, Dong Jin harbored feelings for Mi Jeong, who was forced to leave after being labeled a “witch.” Unable to confess his feelings at the time, Dong Jin now sets out on a mission to uncover the truth behind the mysterious curse of misfortune that surrounds her, using the power of big data.
Jinyoung shared his reason for choosing “The Witch,” “The idea of wanting to protect someone you love from afar felt incredibly fresh, and I was also curious about how director Kim Tae Kyun would bring it to life.”
Describing his character, Jinyoung shared, “Dong Jin is like a genius who focuses intensely on one thing at a time.” He added, “When he’s working or investigating the curse tied to Mi Jeong, I wanted to portray the feeling that he’s so absorbed, it’s as if he doesn’t hear or see anything else around him.”
Dong Jin is a solitary character with no hobbies and almost no friends. For Jinyoung, capturing Dong Jin’s voice was crucial. “It was important to first find a tone I could believe in for someone who is so absorbed in his own world,” he explained.
Jinyoung also reflected on the challenges of playing such a solitary character, acknowledging that the support of the production team was vital. Calling “The Witch” a “project with a shared heart,” he expressed gratitude for the collaborative atmosphere on set, where frequent discussions helped strengthen the overall work.
He reserved special thanks for Roh Jeong Eui who plays Mi Jeong, saying, “She provided a sense of stability when we worked together and made it easy for me to bring out my emotions. I was so grateful and reassured by her presence.”
As a final note, Jinyoung teased viewers by saying, “As Dong Jin uncovers the ‘laws of the witch’ and ultimately comes to a realization about his feelings, following that journey will make the drama all the more enjoyable.”
“The Witch” will premiere on February 15 at 9:10 p.m. KST following the conclusion of “Check in Hanyang.” Stay tuned!
