Seo Kang Joon Shares Thoughts On His Upcoming Comedy-Action Drama And More

Actor Seo Kang Joon joined Cosmopolitan Korea magazine for a pictorial and interview!

After his discharge from the military in May 2023, Seo Kang Joon chose “Undercover High School” (literal title) as his next project. The comedy-action drama tells the story of Jung Hae Sung (Seo Kang Joon), a National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent who goes undercover as a high school student to track down Emperor Gojong’s missing gold.

Following his photo shoot with Cosmopolitan Korea, Seo Kang Joon sat down for an interview and reflected on the year he spent preparing for his new role. “I came back from the military, and after almost three years of not working, I started to feel a bit impatient,” he recalled. “Then, in July, I began filming the drama, and it was such a joy. On the first day of filming, I even sent a message to the CEO of my agency. Despite the scorching heat, I was just so happy.”

Seo Kang Joon, who is now in the 13th year of his acting career, also shared, “Recently, I’ve been thinking about the gap between the characters I play and who I am as a person. Filming ‘Undercover High School’ made me reflect on myself through Hae Sung. Hae Sung is playful and energetic, while I see myself as more quiet and calm. But I’ve realized that every character I’ve portrayed is a part of me. The bright side of Seo Kang Joon helped shape Hae Sung. So I’ve recently been taking time to reflect on myself.”

Reflecting on his character, Seo Kang Joon went on, “Hae Sung and I have one thing in common—our view of the world. We often see the world as beautiful, but if you look deeper, there’s a darker, more unpleasant side. While things may appear beautiful, I’m always curious about the raw, unfiltered truth behind them. Hae Sung is similar. As an NIS agent, he battles evil, but he also understands the world’s injustices. During an operation, he infiltrates a school and spends time with the students, and there, he witnesses the same societal flaws. Eventually, he’s moved by his friends at school and starts helping them.”

When asked about his feelings ahead of his long-awaited new project, Seo Kang Joon expressed his excitement by remarking, “I really missed being on set. The joy of working with the director and creating each scene is huge, and I’m so happy to be doing it again. Every scene is challenging, but at the same time, it feels like my life is full. It’s like I’m slowly stepping back into the circle I originally came from.”

Seo Kang Joon’s full interview and pictorial can be found in the February issue of Cosmopolitan Korea. Meanwhile, his upcoming drama “Undercover High School” will premiere on February 21 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
