“The Scandal Of Chunhwa” Director And Writer Praise Go Ara And Jang Ryul, Discuss Drama's Inspiration, And More

The director and scriptwriter for the upcoming drama “The Scandal of Chunhwa” have shared their thoughts on the cast!

“The Scandal of Chunhwa” is a historical romance drama that tells the story of Princess Hwa Ri (Go Ara) who, after experiencing the heartbreak of her first love, declares her intention to choose her future husband herself. Her groundbreaking decision throws the royal palace into turmoil and entangles her with two men: Choi Hwan (Jang Ryul), the city’s most notorious playboy, and Jang Won (SF9’s Chani), the city’s most eligible bachelor.

At a time when strict gender roles were the norm, the idea of young people forming connections naturally has captured interest. Writer Seo Eun Jung, who created the story, said it all began with the concept of “a book circulating in a fictional dynasty featuring an R-rated painting of a princess’s face.” She explained, “In a society where the class system was strictly enforced, who would dare to paint a princess’s face in an R-rated work? After imagining and reimagining the possibilities, the character of Princess Hwa Ri came to life.”

Director Lee Kwang Young’s first impression of Seo Eun Jung’s vision was that it felt “simple.” He explained, “What matters most is making it easy for the audience to understand the protagonist’s emotions, and that’s what drew me in. The characters may come from a different time and background, but I hope viewers can connect with their emotions just as easily as I did.”

Writer Seo Eun Jung described Princess Hwa Ri as a deeply curious person. “She questions even the things everyone in her time takes for granted. But she doesn’t stop at asking—she takes action. She may seem reckless or immature, but to me, she is endearing,” she said.

The writer added, “Everything we consider normal today was once unconventional. Maybe it’s thanks to people like her that the world has slowly changed.” She explained that this was her way of highlighting women’s agency in that era.

Director Lee Kwang Young shared his thoughts on the casting, saying, “Hwa Ri has been surrounded by love her entire life, so I wanted an actress who could capture that warmth. Go Ara was a natural fit.”

For Choi Hwan, the director explained, “He appears strong and confident, but deep down, he has the heart of a boy who never fully grew up. In that respect, I thought it would be perfect for Jang Ryul, who at first glance appears to have strong lines but has a delicate, boyish smile.”

Writer Seo Eun Jung also expressed her gratitude to the cast, saying, “I just want to thank all the actors. The world I had only imagined in my head really came to life through their performances, and it felt amazing.”

Director Lee Kwang Young concluded, “‘The Scandal of Chunhwa’ starts with Princess Hwa Ri, who once valued love but loses it. The story shows her journey to rediscover love, and I wanted to tell it boldly and provocatively. As she steps outside the palace walls and into the world, I hope love plays a key role in driving that change.” He added, “Throughout the story, viewers will smile at the warm love stories of the different characters.”

Seo Eun Jung added, “In a time when even a noble princess had no freedom, she could freely imagine anything in the pages of a storybook. I hope viewers will root for Hwa Ri, who dreamed the impossible in such an old-fashioned era.”

“The Scandal of Chunhwa” will premiere on February 6. Stay tuned!
