IU And Park Bo Gum's "When Life Gives You Tangerines" Reveals Unique Release Schedule
IU and Park Bo Gum’s new Netflix drama “When Life Gives You Tangerines” has unveiled its first still along with details on its unique release schedule!
“When Life Gives You Tangerines” will tell the adventurous life stories of Ae Sun and Gwan Sik as they experience the vibrant seasons of Jeju Island. IU will play the role of the bold and rebellious Ae Sun while Park Bo Gum will star as Gwan Sik, a quiet but reliable character.
The drama will be written by hit writer Lim Sang Chun of “Fight My Way” and “When the Camellia Blooms” and directed by Kim Won Seok, who previously worked on “Misaeng (Incomplete Life),” “Signal,” and “My Mister.”
On February 4, Netflix officially announced that “When Life Gives You Tangerines” will premiere on March 7 and unfold over four weeks.
Spanning across four acts—spring, summer, fall, and winter, the 16-episode drama will be released in weekly installments, with four episodes dropping every Friday from March 7 to March 28.
Netflix’s Senior Director Bae Jong Byung shared insights into this decision, explaining, “Since the story is structured in four acts, we discussed with the creators how to best deliver the story to viewers. We concluded that releasing four episodes per week over four weeks would allow audiences to fully appreciate the storytelling intent and enjoy the experience to the fullest.”
Along with the announcement, Netflix also unveiled the drama’s first still, offering a glimpse into Ae Sun and Gwan Sik’s dynamic. In the image, Ae Sun appears somewhat sulky in her school uniform, while Gwan Sik looks on quietly from her side. Even in this single frame, their contrasting yet complementary energies are evident—Ae Sun’s fiery resilience and Gwan Sik’s unwavering presence sparking intrigue about their journey together.
Director Kim Won Seok shed light on the heart of the drama, stating, “It’s a story about a girl who dreams endlessly but faces repeated setbacks due to poverty, her island upbringing, and simply being a woman. Yet, she always rises again. Gwan Sik, on the other hand, is a reliable man who would do anything for Ae Sun. Their journey, whether together or apart, is a grand adventure through life.”
Expectations are high for IU and Park Bo Gum’s on-screen chemistry, with Director Kim teasing, “I think it will be one of the most entertaining and captivating pairings you can imagine. Park Bo Gum will show a side of himself that people haven’t seen before, while IU will bring out all the charms she has displayed in past works—and then some.”
Netflix’s Bae Jong Byung added, “Viewers will find themselves wondering, ‘Why haven’t they worked together sooner?’”
“When Life Gives You Tangerines” will premiere on March 7. Stay tuned for updates!
