4 Unbelievable Moments For Hwang Minhyun In Episodes 5-6 Of 'Study Group'

There aren’t that many webtoon-based K-dramas that can do justice to the original work, especially when it comes to action, but “Study Group” has been giving us some amazing moments that seem straight out of the comic itself. And while the action speaks for itself, the story is also enthralling in a very special way. Youn Ga Min (Hwang Minhyun) continues defying himself to be a better student but also a friend and son, which is why in this week’s episodes he had to face a lot more than just a couple of battles. This time he will have to break his own boundaries in order to protect what he loves the most. Here are some of the most unbelievable moments for him in the show so far.

Warning: spoilers from episodes 5-6 below!

1. Saving the Manik High School students from bullies

Last week, Yusung Technical High School’s study group had the chance to visit another school and enhance their study methods. However, as Youn Ga Min isn’t the luckiest nor the most brilliant boy, his first chance to learn from other students goes berserk when he arrives at Manik High School instead of Manil High School. Although this one isn’t exactly like Yusung, it is very much the same, with bullies attacking and ruling over the weak. So it is no surprise that the first thing Ga Min has to do when he sets foot in this school is to fight a bunch of them. Nobody is messing with good students under his watch.

Unexpectedly, Ga Min saves the top student at Manik, who turns out to be one of his old middle school classmates, the same one who rejected him when he tried to join his study group. After quickly fighting off the bullies, Ga Min returns unscathed to the school where he was supposed to be. Although Ga Min has been constantly praised by everyone for his physical abilities, there have been very few people who actually recognize his endless determination to become a good student. So having one of the best students of a top school acknowledge his perseverance and efforts brings Ga Min to tears and brings viewers to tears as well.

2. Helping Kim Se Hyun win a battle for himself

As much as Ga Min wants to protect the people he cares about, he can’t be around them all the time, especially when his mother has a very strict curfew. So, it’s only natural there are moments when his friends, especially Kim Se Hyun (Lee Jong Hyun), are harassed and bullied for being part of the study group. Although Se Hyun is probably one of the most brilliant kids in all of Yusung, that doesn’t stop him from feeling helpless when it comes to fighting people one-on-one. Even when Ga Min does save him, that only increases his insecurities and frustration, which ultimately drives him to push Ga Min aside.

Their friendship goes to a deeper level in these couple of episodes. Ga Min gets to see and understand a little more about Se Hyun’s situation and takes a step aside, guiding him when a bully attacks him instead of defending him straight on. In the end, it is Se Hyun’s courage that takes down his attacker, proving he has an inner strength that not even he was aware of. On the other hand, Se Hyun also sees Ga Min in a new light when Ga Min opens up more about why he is so eager to become a better student. That’s how we find out Ga Min’s father is a renowned genius, which has taken a toll on Ga Min’s life since he is far from being like him, creating a great wound in his heart.

3. Ga Min’s mother transferring him to another school

Every action has its consequences, so when Ga Min decides to stay back and help Se Hyun, breaking his mother’s curfew, he knows he has to prepare himself to face the outcome, which turns out to be his transference to another school. Although his mother looks like an understanding and caring parent, she is actually quite tough. She doesn’t give much choice to Ga Min but to comply. After all, he did break his promise to always get home on time and stay out of trouble. But as determined as she is, so are his friends. They know that with Ga Min’s grades, it won’t be that easy to transfer him right away. But that also won’t stop his mother.

The only option left for them is to try to convince her to give Ga Min a second chance with the help of teacher Lee Han Kyeong (Han Ji Eun). As hilarious as it is watching Lee Ji Woo (Shin Su Hyun) trying to hide the school’s terrible conditions, or Choi Hee Won (Yoon Sang Jung) telling a bizarre lie that she is pregnant, it is also moving to see that they do consider Ga Min the leader of their group. Despite their completely different personalities, they have become very good friends. Losing Ga Min would probably mean the end of their study group, which is why they go as far as to chase him and his mother, trying to stop her from moving to Seoul.

4. Confronting Pi Han Ul for the first time directly

Sadly, things go awfully wrong when they try to stop Ga Min’s mother as they are intercepted by another group of bullies on their way there. Although Lee Jun (Gong Do Yu) has learned a lot from Ga Min, he is still far from being able to defeat a whole gang alone. Still, he stays behind to allow the rest of the group to go after Ga Min and his mother. Han Kyeong is positive she can make her change her mind, but the moment she is about to get an answer, Pi Han Ul’s (Cha Woo Min’s) underlings barge in, wreaking havoc to retaliate against Han Kyeong.

Unaware that Han Kyeong has practically declared war against Han Ul by notifying the education council about his misdeeds at Yusung, Cha Min and his friends bravely fight Ma Min Hwan (Baek Seo Hoo). Unfortunately, it is Cha Min’s mother, an incredible Tae Kwon Do master, who gets severely hurt while protecting Han Kyeong. Seeing his mother hurt and his friends threatened, Ga Min has no other choice but to confront Han Ul head on, fighting first his guardians and later punching Han Ul in front of the whole school, which marks the beginning of a fierce battle that will start in the upcoming episodes of “Study Group.”
