Choi Woo Shik And Park Bo Young Discuss Their Natural Chemistry In “Melo Movie,” Park Seo Joon And Park Hyung Sik’s Reactions, And More

Choi Woo Shik and Park Bo Young have offered a deeper look into their highly anticipated Netflix romance drama “Melo Movie”!

On February 12, the press conference for Netflix’s new original series “Melo Movie” was held in Jongno, Seoul, with lead actors Choi Woo Shik, Park Bo Young, Lee Jun Young, Jeon So Nee, and director Oh Choong Hwan in attendance.

“Melo Movie” is a romance drama about the journey of four young people yearning for love and pursuing their dreams in the face of relentless hardships. Despite their personal struggles, they find inspiration and solace in one another while overcoming their own traumas.

The drama is penned by Lee Na Eun, the scriptwriter behind “Our Beloved Summer,” and helmed by director Oh Choong Hwan of “Castaway Diva,” “Big Mouth,” “Start-Up,” “Hotel Del Luna,” and more.

Choi Woo Shik plays Ko Gyeom, an aspiring actor-turned-film critic who falls in love with Kim Mu Bee (Park Bo Young) at first sight. Mu Bee, whose name sounds like “movie” in Korean, is a film director who wound up in the industry due to her love-hate relationship with her cinephile father, who always put film before her.

Director Oh Choong Hwan, along with Choi Woo Shik and Park Bo Young, revealed that they were drawn to the drama because of Lee Na Eun’s writing. Having previously worked with the writer, Choi Woo Shik shared, “I already knew how compelling her scripts are, so I was excited to join. The entire filming process felt like a journey of growth, and I was truly happy throughout.”

Park Bo Young shared, “I was captivated by the realistic love story and the stories of young people having their own dreams. Since Woo Shik was cast before me, when I read the script, Gyeom kept appearing as Woo Shik in my mind. It was so easy to picture that I knew I had to take the role.”

Addressing concerns about similarities between his “Melo Movie” character and his role in “Our Beloved Summer,” Choi Woo Shik clarified, “Gyeom and Choi Woong have different personalities. While Choi Woong was introverted and kept things to himself, Gyeom is more outgoing and isn’t afraid to seek help when needed. It’s like the difference between ‘I’ and an ‘E’ in MBTI terms. You’ll see a completely extroverted Gyeom in this drama.”

The drama’s romance is set to be a major highlight, with Choi Woo Shik describing his approach to playing Ko Gyeom: “It actually felt easier. Gyeom falls in love at first sight, faces a sudden breakup, and later experiences an unexpected reunion—but through it all, he remains unwavering in his pursuit. He’s the type who doesn’t give up—if there’s even a sliver of hope, he’ll push forward. That determination allowed me to portray him in a more dynamic, honest, and fun way.”

Park Bo Young shed light on Mu Bee’s emotional arc, saying, “Mu Bee keeps pushing Gyeom away, but when he suddenly disappears, she starts feeling the weight of his absence; I tried to express that emotional shift. Usually, when faced with an unexpected breakup, people try to understand the other person’s perspective—but this time, I wanted to portray someone who is completely selfish, someone who only thinks about her own emotions.”

A key point of anticipation is the chemistry between the two leads. Notably, Park Bo Young has previously worked with Choi Woo Shik’s close friends Park Seo Joon and Park Hyung Sik. When asked how they reacted to his collaboration with Park Bo Young, Choi Woo Shik shared, “They were all really excited. Not just my friends, but everyone kept saying how amazing she is—how talented, kind, and wonderful she is. And I completely understand why. She was such a great support on set, even helping with my mental well-being.”

Park Bo Young added, “Each of them has different strengths. Seo Joon is older than me, while Hyung Sik is younger, and they’re both actors that I like. But this was my first time acting with someone my age. It made me realize how comfortable and natural it feels to act alongside a same-age friend. It was so, so great. The set was always so comfortable. Woo Shik makes me feel the most at ease. Even today, Woo Shik makes me laugh with whatever he says—before he even says anything, it’s already funny. He’s like my laugh button, he’s so lovely that you’d want to watch him whenever you need a mood boost.”

“Melo Movie” will premiere on February 14.
