Shin Hyun Seung Becomes An Ever-Optimistic Guesthouse Owner Hosting Lee Sun Bin And Kim Ga Eun In New Drama “The Potato Lab”
tvN’s upcoming drama “The Potato Lab” has released new stills featuring Shin Hyun Seung!
“The Potato Lab” is a new romantic comedy drama set in a rural potato research institute. The story follows Kim Mi Kyeong (Lee Sun Bin), a researcher whose life revolves entirely around potatoes, and So Baek Ho (Kang Tae Oh), a cold and principled corporate director. When So Baek Ho unexpectedly enters Kim Mi Kyeong’s world, the two find themselves entangled in a whirlwind romance.
Shin Hyun Seung plays Kim Hwan Kyung, the most optimistic person in the village. The newly released stills offer a glimpse into his daily life. He runs the USB Guesthouse in the village that is home to the potato research institute and lives by the motto, “What’s good is good.” No matter the circumstances, he stays upbeat—even when his only guests are his older sister, Kim Mi Kyeong, and her friend, Lee Ong Joo (Kim Ga Eun).
However, his confidence quickly fades when facing his older sister. With her sharp glare and no-nonsense attitude, Kim Mi Kyeong keeps her younger brother in check, leaving him visibly nervous. This contrast between her commanding presence and his timid nature adds humor to the story.
One particularly fun moment shows Kim Hwan Kyung and Lee Ong Joo in perfect sync, each holding a spoon in their mouths—a sight sure to make viewers smile. Their unexpected chemistry adds an intriguing dynamic to the drama.
The playful sibling-like bond between Kim Mi Kyeong, Lee Ong Joo, and Kim Hwan Kyung at the USB Guesthouse is already building excitement for this heartwarming and comedic trio.
Shin Hyun Seung shared what drew him to the project, saying, “The title immediately caught my attention. The familiar theme of potatoes, combined with the lighthearted and fun romantic comedy atmosphere, felt both charming and memorable. Plus, the relationships between the characters, set against the backdrop of the potato research institute, created a warm, family-like feeling.”
Describing his character, he said, “Hwan Kyung is kind and full of love. He is easygoing and free-spirited but also takes his role as the guesthouse owner seriously. He’s the only one in the guesthouse with zero fighting power, and he’s incredibly emotional. In a way, he’s like soft, fluffy mashed potatoes.”
Shin Hyun Seung also highlighted the cast’s strong chemistry, saying, “I wanted to capture the role of the youngest sibling between Mi Kyeong and Ong Joo.” He added, “Just like the drama’s lighthearted tone, the atmosphere on set was warm and cheerful. Thanks to my co-stars’ support, I laughed a lot and truly enjoyed filming.”
“The Potato Lab” is set to premiere on March 1 at 9:20 p.m. KST.
