Watch: Lee Yo Won, SF9's Chani, Jo Jae Yoon, And More Live In A World Where AI Coexists With Humans In Trailer For "Galatea"
Upcoming film “Galatea” has released its main trailer!
“Galatea” explores a world set in the near future where human-like AIs coexist with real humans in South Korea. The film expands on the universe of director Hwang Seung Jae’s award-winning film “The Interviewees,” which won the Grand Prize (Daesang) in the Video Category at the 8th SF Awards in 2021. Through a hyper-realistic depiction of the future, the film also delves into pressing social issues in modern-day Korea.
The trailer opens with a news broadcast and a depiction of South Korea that looks much like the present. However, a closer look reveals that AI beings—indistinguishable from humans—live among people.
The trailer then introduces several intriguing characters. In one scene, Beom Soo (SF9’s Chani) suddenly demands 100 million won (approximately $69,000) from his elderly mother (Lee Joo Shil). In another, a man (Jo Jae Yoon) attempts to dispose of an abandoned AI on the street, while a woman (Lee Yo Won) tries to protect it. Another scene shows a man (Baek Soo Jang) questioning an AI named Yeon Kyung (Lee Jae Yi) about the real Yeon Kyung’s whereabouts.
One striking scene features Ki Chan (Jung Kyung Ho) locked in a fight with an AI that looks exactly like him, sparking curiosity about their conflict. The teaser ends with Beom Soo’s elderly mother looking at him and asking, “You’re a ghost, aren’t you?”
