3 Best Moments In Episodes 7-8 Of 'The Witch'

The Witch” is finally coming to an end and is more thrilling than ever. While the entirety of episodes seven and eight kept the audience on the edge of their seats, three moments in particular stole the show. From Dong Jin (Jinyoung) verifying the Law of Death while risking his life, to the unexpected variable that might have proven Mi Jeong (Roh Jeong Eui) to be a witch, here are the three best moments from episodes seven and eight of “The Witch.”

Warning: spoilers for episodes 7 and 8 ahead!

The Law of Death verification

Since the premiere, we’ve seen Dong Jin gathering evidence and writing reports. While these tasks make up about 80 percent of what data analysts and miners do, watching the same process repeatedly can get a bit tedious. However, in the recent episodes, our main lead flips the script, going beyond data collection to test the law he theorized based on the data he gathered: The Law of Death. These scenes were as thrilling as one would anticipate, proving why “The Witch” is a top-tier thriller mystery K-drama.

At the end of episode six, Dong Jin takes a job at a grocery store where Mi Jeong places her orders, hoping to get closer to her. While this step comes off as more stalker-ish, this slightly unethical act ends up making the recent episodes even more entertaining. After becoming an employee, he starts delivering Mi Jeong’s orders and tests his theory: being within 10 meters of Mi Jeong for 10 minutes is dangerous.

Although he leaves her apartment complex within the time limit, he still gets slightly injured in a thrilling scene. This moment leads him to another realization; the number of sentences exchanged between them is also a trigger. Thus, talking to Mi Jeong for 10 sentences is just as dangerous.

Some much-needed romance-esque scenes

One of the most frustrating things in media, including the book publishing industry, is when a story is categorized incorrectly. Unfortunately, that seems to be the case with “The Witch.” Advertised as a romance mystery thriller, the drama led audiences to believe they would see Jinyoung and Roh Jeong Eui set the screen on fire. However, the couple barely interacted for the first six episodes, or, simply stated, 60 percent of the show. Thankfully, that changed in episode seven, and we finally got some romance-esque scenes from our main leads.

The first interaction between the couple happens when Dong Jin delivers Mi Jeong’s grocery order. Mi Jeong secretly smiles at him. While she immediately admits to herself this is only because she hasn’t talked to a man in a long time, she still finds herself liking him a little and anticipating their Tuesday deliveries.

Another heart-fluttering moment occurs when Dong Jin, despite knowing that talking to Mi Jeong for more than 10 minutes is dangerous, is unable to leave her side. He tells the audience, “I forgot how many sentences we exchanged, but seeing her smile was worth it.”

Lastly, when Mi Jeong is on a bus and Dong Jin gets on the same one, he thinks to himself as their ride nears its end, “This time isn’t enough. I wish there was traffic.” Yes, following Mi Jeong onto the bus is stalker behavior, but how can Jinyoung’s smooth dialogue delivery not make your heart skip a beat?

The unexpected variable

As previously explained in “The Witch,” The Law of Death, which is still just a hypothesis, is simple:

1. Being within 10 meters of Mi Jeong is dangerous.
2. Talking to her is dangerous.
3. Her knowing your name is dangerous.
4. Confessing your love to her is dangerous.
5. If all of the above apply, death will occur. If even one condition is missing, you will be injured but not dead.

Each of these actions is dangerous on its own, and when combined, the consequences are deadly. However, things take an unexpected turn in the recent episodes when Dong Jin encounters what he initially believes to be a discrepancy: Ik Jong (Joo Jong Hyuk).

Ik Jong, Mi Jeong’s university senior and from the same church, did all four forbidden things but did not die. Unlike other men who suffered severe consequences, Ik Jong was only bitten by a hornet. This incident alone is enough to disprove The Law of Death. However, after further investigation, Dong Jin uncovers the truth.

Ik Jong was never bitten by a hornet. Instead, he had been suffering from epilepsy long before meeting Mi Jeong. When he had a seizure, Mi Jeong told the people it was a hornet bite to protect his privacy. While this explains the situation, it also deepens the mystery. Ik Jong neither died nor was seriously hurt despite breaking all the rules.

Eventually, the reason behind Ik Jong’s exceptional survival is revealed: Mi Jeong’s affection. Every man Mi Jeong loves is safe from The Law of Death, even if they break all the forbidden rules. Since Ik Jong was Mi Jeong’s first love, he received the same protection. This revelation also suggests that Mi Jeong might actually be a witch, though the exact mechanics behind it remain unknown.

Episodes seven and eight of “The Witch” might have given us multiple heart attacks, but one scene, in particular, was both thrilling and unexpectedly comedic: the final scene of episode eight.

As Dong Jin prepares to leave Mi Jeong’s neighborhood for good, he notices a heavy sign on the wall above him, its nail coming loose and about to fall. Our genius main lead casually remarks, “Your patterns are quite simple,” before walking away unscathed. However, just as he crosses the street, he is instantly hit by a car.

While getting hit by a car is certainly not funny, and I hope Dong Jin recovers soon, the scene plays on a classic K-drama trope, where the main lead is struck and severely injured, making it amusing to see this dramatic cliché resurface.
