Watch: Rookie Boy Group Member Talks About Going From Athlete To Idol On 'The King Of Mask Singer'

On the latest episode of “The King of Mask Singer,” the identity of “Spring Roll” was revealed!

During the March 30 broadcast of the MBC singing competition, eight new contestants stepped up to challenge the reigning champion for the throne.

In the third match-up of Round 1, “Spring Roll” and “Shinseollo” faced off with a duet version of Noel’s Jeon Woo Sung’s famous ballad “What If.”

After watching their performance, several of the celebrity panelists speculated that Spring Roll might be an idol, while Lee Hyun Yi suggested that he might be a model.

In order to provide a clue to his identity, Spring Roll showcased his impressive jumping skills, wowing the crowd with a skillful vertical jump as he landed on a block about 1.1 meters tall. Multiple panelists then guessed that Spring Roll was an athlete or a former athlete-turned-idol like WEi’s Kim Yo Han (who was once a taekwondo athlete before debuting as a singer).

Although Spring Roll earned praise for his charming vocal tone, he ultimately lost the round to his opponent.

Spring Roll went on to perform a cover of Geeks’ “Officially Missing You,” taking off his mask halfway through to reveal his identity. The high-flying masked singer turned out to be Chael, a member of Fantagio’s rookie boy group LUN8.

Host Kim Sung Joo then explained why Chael had chosen to do a vertical jump earlier: before debuting as an idol in 2023, Chael used to be a volleyball player.

“I started playing volleyball in my second year of high school, but I quit in my sophomore year of college because of an injury,” revealed Chael.

The idol went on to share that his jumping skills had actually posed a problem while dancing together with his group. “There’s a move in our choreography where we all jump at the same time, but I keep staying in the air longer and coming back down later than the other members,” he said with a laugh. “Our dance instructor told me to just [give up on synchronization] and stay in the air longer, as if we had all planned to do it differently. So we added variation to the move.”

Now that his mask was off, Chael also danced to a brief snippet of ASTRO’s “Candy Sugar Pop” for the crowd.
