3 Final And Emotional Moments In The Last Episodes Of "Way Back Love"
Sometimes shows are so good that they can move you to your core, leaving a deep and emotional impression on your memory. “Way Back Love” is exactly one of those dramas. Intertwined with fantasy, life-lessons, and youthful romance, the story of Jung Hee Wan (Kim Min Ha) and Kim Ram Woo (Gong Myoung) has ended with two episodes full of heartfelt and tear-jerking moments that will definitely be hard to let go of. Here are some of the most touching moments to bid one last farewell to this endearing story.
Warning: spoilers from episodes 5-6 below.
1. Ram Woo and Hee Wan visiting their families
One of the most dreaded moments in these last episodes was, without a doubt, Hee Wan and Ram Woo’s reencounter with his mother as this ultimate reunion would surely make anybody cry a river. And not only do we find out what happened to her after Ram Woo’s death, but we also learn the truth behind his birth. It turns out he was born out of wedlock, which explains why they moved out quite often. Watching a mother grieving over a child must be one of the hardest things in the world, which makes it all the more amazing to see the acting between actors Gong Myoung and Seo Young Hee as they portray the moment a mother and son meet again for the last time.
This visit gives Hee Wan a bit of closure and the peace of mind to finally stop blaming herself for Ram Woo’s passing. When Hee Wan sees how Ram Woo’s mother finds solace rather than pain in longing for her son, it gives her the courage to admit that she doesn’t want to let him go just yet. Determined to make every second count, she prepares to say goodbye to her own family, giving them things that will make them think fondly of her, just like Ram Woo’s mother. With this new approach on her last day on earth, she also makes her own bucket list, ready to end her life without thinking that Ram Woo has a completely different plan for her.
2. Hee Wan and Ram Woo having their first date
As it turns out, Ram Woo never intended to take Hee Wan to the afterlife. Instead, he breaks the rules of the Grim Reapers after finding out how miserable she was after his death. While talking with another Grim Reaper (cameo appearance by Krystal), he decides he can give Hee Wan a last chance to find the will to keep on living. That’s why he shows up at her front door from the beginning, hoping to change the fate where she dies, even if that means vanishing for good. In his effort, he asks for help from a college senior who turns out to be able to see him, although we never know how this is possible.
But for all the romance and all the silliness shown during their first and only date, you can never forget the fact that this is it. This is as much as they will get. Luckily, they never show us a what-if because that would definitely be too much to bear. Their tragic love, as painful as it is, remains pure and true despite its unfortunate ending. But that is life in itself. Sometimes, even with magic or fantasy, life can be harder than we expected, but it is still worth living. That is exactly what Ram Woo wants for Hee Wan: to love living, even if it is difficult at times.
3. Hee Wan finally letting go of Ram Woo
The final goodbye comes sooner than Hee Wan wants it. She has no choice but to let go of Ram Woo a second time, feeling even emptier than before. This pain pushes her to make an extreme decision, but Ram Woo’s efforts don’t go in vain. Right before she can take her own life, Hee Wan’s college classmate, Go Young Hyun (Shim Eun Kyung), stops her. That’s when Ram Woo appears once again, finally being able to go to the afterlife without regrets.
Even if it doesn’t have the romantic and fairytale-like ending that some people would’ve loved, like by some miracle they could stay together, the way Hee Wan learns to love Ram Woo by loving herself is still satisfactory. It keeps their memories together intact, gets her to reunite with her old and new friends, she has a successful graduation, and overall keeps her going on with her life, giving us a very meaningful message about love and resilience in the most beautiful way.
