IU And Byeon Woo Seok's Drama Confirms Cast And Broadcast Plans
It’s official—IU and Byeon Woo Seok’s drama “Wife of a 21st Century Prince” (working title) will greet viewers in 2026!
On April 21, it was confirmed that “Wife of a 21st Century Prince” will broadcast as a Friday-Saturday drama via MBC in 2026. The drama further announced its casting lineup of IU, Byeon Woo Seok, Noh Sang Hyun, and Gong Seung Yeon.
“Wife of a 21st Century Prince” is a romance drama set in an alternate version of Korea that is a constitutional monarchy. The drama will tell the love story of Sung Hee Joo (IU), a chaebol heiress who has everything but is only a commoner in status, and Lee Wan (Byeon Woo Seok), a prince who has nothing despite being the son of the king.
IU will star as Sung Hee Joo, the second daughter of the family that owns the biggest conglomerate in Korea. Born with beauty, brains, and a fierce competitive streak, Sung Hee Joo has always enjoyed every advantage. However, when her commoner status unexpectedly becomes an obstacle in her perfect life, she winds up in a contract marriage with Prince Lee Wan in order to pursue noble status—the one thing she lacks.
Byeon Woo Seok will star as Lee Wan, a sad prince who cannot have anything but his royal status due to being born as the king’s second son. After hiding away his entire life, Lee Wan begins to undergo a major change in his life after meeting Sung Hee Joo.
Noh Sang Hyun will play Min Jung Woo, a prime minister from a prestigious political family and a close friend of Prince Lee Wan. Having risen to the prime minister position after following in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps, Min Jung Woo is a highly eligible bachelor with his affluent background, sharp intelligence, and handsome looks. He is a childhood friend of Prince Lee Wan as well as a senior to Sung Hee Joo from the royal academy, resulting in his emotions being shaken up following the contract marriage between the prince and Hee Joo.
Gong Seung Yeon plays Yoon Yi Rang, a woman born with “the destiny of a queen.” Yoon Yi Rang hails from a family that has produced four queens, and she is a “perfect queen” who has never doubted that she will become the queen. Choosing the role of the queen over her personal identity, she fights desperately to protect her fate no matter the circumstances.
The drama will be helmed by director Park Joon Hwa, who is known for hit projects such as “Rude Miss Young Ae,” “Let’s Eat” 1 and 2, “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim,” “Alchemy of Souls,” and more.
