BoA Performs Despite Ankle Sprain

Pan-Asian star BoA has taken a risk by performing despite an ankle sprain at a concert held as part of a fireworks display at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo on Wednesday. The Japanese sports daily Nikkan Sports praised BoA for her professionalism in a Thursday article.

The paper said that the Korean singer sprained her right ankle during rehearsals that began on Monday, which made it difficult for her to even walk properly. What was worse, she was suffering from accumulated exhaustion from excessive preparation for the concert. But on the day of the concert, she went onstage without asking to change the program and performed all the planned dance songs as well as the ballad songs, the paper said. The songs included “Key of Heart,” a song from her recently-released 20th single album, accompanied by an energetic dance performance.

BoA’s staff advised her to give up, but BoA insisted on going ahead with the performance and did not even mention her injury to the audience. Immediately after the performance, she was taken to the hospital.

Nikkan Sports cited BoA as saying that she did not give up because she wanted to see the first fireworks in Japan this year, although she grimaced with pain as she made the comment.

Earlier on her Japan tour in April last year, BoA suffered a muscle rupture in one leg, but did not cancel the tour. Rather, she performed after taking painkillers instead of applying a bandage to the leg, because she worried that a bandage would prevent her from giving a perfect performance.
