Weekly Music Chart 2007 - January week 1

As we get into 2007 I am making some major changes to the chart. I am expanding this chart from 20 to 50 songs. Most of the Korean music charts have 50 songs anyway so we are now in line with them.

Also, there have been some complaints in the past that some of the fans couldn’t find their favorite singer’s song on our top 20. Now with 50 songs we are going to cover a much wider range of songs. However, we are still going to focus on the top 20 songs. From 21-50, I’ll list the songs and their movement from previous weeks. But I’ll highlight a few songs bubbling below the top 20 as songs to watch out for or to recommend.

Our chart source and the scoring method remain the same. The few changes that I have made:

1. I’ll include all 50 songs from the Inky Gayo Take 7 chart (still with 1 week lag) – previously I included the top 30, but this chart is too teenybopper-biased, so including all 50 songs will be fairer to all artistes.

2. For the album sales part of the score, I’ll include the top 40 selling albums with a hit song instead of top 25 (still 2 weeks lag). Hanteo only gave us the top 20 albums weekly, but another source KMDIA, gave us 50 albums. By doing this, the gap between album sales scores from one album to the next will be reduced, meaning that the competition will be tighter.

3. MTV Korea charts will now be an internet chart source, because I think their chart is no different from other internet sources. Instead, Hanteo’s top 50 songs chart will replace MTV as a 5% source.

The other parts of my post will remain the same, only that the artiste of the week we may "recycle" artistes we have already introduced before when they have a new album and new information coming out.

Summary for January week 1 chart:

No. 1 song: SG Wannabe’s "사랑가" (A Song of Love) moves up to the top spot. SG Wannabe just won our own DaeSang on the 2006 Soompi Gayo Award, and they started 2007 right where they left off in 2006, with another No. 1 song.

Biggest mover of the week: Jang Woo Hyuk’s "폭풍속으로" (One Way) moves up 13 spots to No. 6. It is the second stint on the chart for this song, and it is doing much better than the first time because Jang Woo Hyuk is performing this song in full swing right now.

Hot shot debut: As One’s "십이야" (Twelve Nights) debuts at No. 7. It’s been a long time since As One hit the top 10. Congratulations to Min and Crystal.

New songs: Since we are expanding to 50 songs this week, we are getting a lot of new songs. 26 of the 50 songs are first time entries, including 6 new songs within the top 20.

Songs to watch out:

12. The Nuts – 잔소리 (Scolded) – I feel that they are the second coming of Buzz. With the popularity of Ji Hyun Woo, they are destined for a major breakthrough on their second album.
25. Brian – 가지마 (Don’t Go) – Brian from Fly To The Sky released his long-awaited solo album. This song should jump into the top 20 next week when his album score kicks in.
26. Kim Ah Joong – MARIA (from movie 200 Pounds Beauty) – A remake from Blondie’s song. Actress Kim Ah Jong sings for the first time in a movie that she starred in. The movie OST is selling exceptionally well, and it is looking to become the first movie OST song to hit our top 10 or top 20. This song is already No. 1 on a lot of internet charts.
31. Bobby Kim – 파랑새 (Blue Bird) – Bobby Kim released his highly acclaimed third (or he called it second) album, and this is the title song. Again it is a mixture of R&B, Hip-Hop, and Reggae. This album has been a top 10 seller since released.

edward1849: This is one of the three new songs featured on SG Wannabe’s best hit album "The Precious History". It is a collaboration song with Vibe that is packed with the harmony voices of the two groups’ united 5 vocalists. The song is also written by Vibe’s Ryu Jae Hyun.

Arirang TV: Featured on Sung Si-kyung’s fifth album titled "The Ballads," this song displays a new vocalism by uniquely using the falsetto. Its lyrics, written by Yoon Jong-shin, are about a man walking the street who holds precious memories of his lover from whom he has just separated. It is a Sung Si-kyung style ballad song displaying his gentle tone and vocals. Sung Si-kyung’s kissing scene with a Japanese actress was the highlight of the music video.

Arirang TV: Featured on SG Wannabe & Brown Eyed Girls’ digital single album titled "SG Wannabe ‘Yong-jun’ & Brown Eyed Girls ‘Ga-in,’" this album brings together the gentle and emotional vocals of SG Wannabe’s vocalist Yong-jun and the husky and powerful vocalism of Brown Eyed Girls’ Ga-in. This song’s refreshing and cheerful melody is like that of a Christmas carol.

Arirang TV: Song included in DBSG’s 3rd album "O-Union." Balloons is a remake of the huge hit song of the popular 80s group Five Fingers, and the new version has a color of its own. With new arrangements and DBSG’s unique harmony, the song is expected to be another hit with fans. The music video shows the cute and adorable side of the DBSG members and it goes well with the song.

Explosive sound is the result of fusing hip-hop dance beats with rock, and the first-person perspective music video, which makes the viewer feel in sync with Jang Woo-hyuk, is attracting a lot of attention.

Arirang TV: From Son Ho-young’s 1st solo album, "YES." The lyrics of the medium-tempo ballad was written by Son Ho-young, himself, and the heart-breaking melody and lyrics are extraordinary. Sohn Ho-young starred in the music video, and the much talked-about underwater kissing scene is about the longing and sadness of Son Ho-young’s character for his dead girlfriend.

The sources of this top 20 chart are pretty much the same, but the weight assigned to each source may be different each week because some charts do not update weekly (e.g. MNet M!Countdown) and I assign fewer percentage when it happens.
