Sweet Sorrow recently gained much recognition due to their participation in the soundtracks of many hit dramas such as “War of Money” and “Bad Couple”. With fame now in their grasp, this four-member group have returned with their second studio album titled SweeticS, three years after their first. What makes this group unique from mainstream artistes in the Korean music industry is that they compose and write all of their songs. Consisting of ten tracks, SweeticS has songs which range from soothing ballads to rock.
The title track of this album is a ballad titled “Farther Away”, which is about a man who realizes that his relationship with his loved one is becoming more and more distant, and yet yearns for this love tie to remain intact. This song definitely showcases Sweet Sorrow’s emotions and listeners can definitely identfiy with the lyrics. However, I feel that their vocal as well as harmonization skills are showcased better in other tracks.
The album starts off with a heartwarming song, “Because You Are Here”. This medium-tempo track is very soothing to the ears and the group’s harmonization is especially lovely during the chorus. The lyrics are also very touching as they basically express how meaningful a loved one is. The song then leads to the second track, “I Love You”, which in contrast is a happy, lighthearted, pop song. The repetition of the phrase “I Love You” definitely brings out this mood and reminded me of Super Junior’s “Marry U”. Pop listeners would definitely enjoy this piece. “Snorkeling” is also another great example of Sweet Sorrow’s great harmonization. “Beautiful” is another masterpiece I could not help but point out. It has a jazz feel and is reminiscent of Kangta’s style. This song again is very soothing. Other tracks to recommend are “Hit!”, which has a rock feel to it, and “Best Friend”, which is an acappella track for fans of those genres.
I felt that Sweet Sorrow did a great job pleasing fans of all different musical genres. They were able to target these groups successfully. In addition, their take on composing and writing all the songs was a definite plus. Personally, I never heard of this group until this album, but through it, I was able to find another favorite.
