Comment:
Hip-hop duo Lee Ssang stole the No. 1 spot from Kim Tae Woo this week
with their latest hit “Girl That Can’t Break Up, Guy that Can’t Leave”,
the title song from their 6th album “Hexagonal”. The duo firmly
established themselves in the mainstream with their 4th album in 2007,
with the No. 1 song “Ballerino”, and finally have their 2nd chart topping
hit. They were very quiet with their 5th album last year
which they did not actively perform and promote. For this 6th album they
switched label to Jungle Entertainment for a fresh start. Having one of
the longest song titles ever is their principal track “Girl That Can’t
Break Up, Guy that Can’t Leave” which features the beautiful vocals of
R&B singer Jung In, who regularly collaborates with Lee Ssang. This
song cleans up on every major internet chart sources in Korea, which is
a big reason why it is ranked No. 1 here.

Comment:
Two weeks ago, Kim Tae Woo held on to the top spot by the tiniest
margin. The same margin happens this week but his song “Love Rain” is
on the short end this time after spending the the last four weeks as
the No. 1 song. Unlike his previous ballads, “Love Rain” is a more
up-tempo song. Produced by Kim Tae Woo and Lee Hyun Seung, it took them
5 months to complete this song. The song will penetrate one’s ears and
heart with its combination of catchy melody, harmonic vocals, and
skillful arrangement.
3. (+9) Wheesung – 주르륵 (Rain Falling)
Score: 762
Genre: R&B Ballad

Comment:
After being the biggest mover last week, Wheesung’s “Rain Falling” is
making another giant leap this week, moving up 9 more spots into the
top three. Wheesung is releasing one more album before he gets set for
his American debut. His 6th studio album titled “Vocalate” was produced
by the singer himself and the title is a play on the words vocal and
chocolate. The title track “Rain Falling” is composed and penned by
Wheesung himself. It is about a man who leaves his lover and holds his
tears, but to have raindrops fall on his face, making it look like he
is tearing up. This song shows why Wheesung is the top male vocalist in
Korea. With its complex melody and arrangement, not too many singers
can pull it off, but Wheesung does it flawlessly.

This hip-hop song is the representative track for T-ara &
Choshinsung’s first digital single album. It freshly combines south
hip-hop beats with electronic sounds and a Korean sentimentality.
Choshinsung has made a comeback with this song, performing with T-ara
on stage after two years away from the spotlight. T-ara is also showing

Comment:
SHINee released their third mini album “2009, Year of Us”. It’s been
five months since their last mini album in which they released their
single, Juliet. The title song for this album is “Ring Ding Dong,”
which has African Congo rhythms with contemporary color while making
use of electric synthesizers. The strong sounds and beats of the songs
will capture listeners’ ears right away. The theme is about the moment
of falling in love with bells ringing in the head. It is one of our
biggest mover this week, moving up 25 spots to No. 9.
10. (+25) MBLAQ – Oh Yeah *** CO-BIGGEST MOVER OF THE WEEK ***
Score: 445
Genre: Pop / Dance
Album: MBLAQ 1st mini-album Track 1
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment:
In this year having a heavy dose of new girl groups, we are finally
seeing some new boybands debuting this Fall. The most intriguing
boyband is none other than MBLAQ, who is produced by k-pop’s most well
known star Bi (Rain). MBLAQ stands for Music Boys Live in Absolute
Quality, is fronted by leader Seung Ho, the group’s oldest member at
22. The main vocalist is GO (Jung Byung Hee), who went by the stage
name Jang Goon when he was with TYKEYS. Celebrity siblings Mir (Bae
Chul Young), the younger brother of actress Go Eun Ah, and Cheon Dung
(Park Sang Hyun), the younger brother of 2NE1’s Sandara, are the
rappers of the group. Last, we have vocalist Lee Joon, who appears as
the younger version of Rain in Ninja Assassin. MBLAQ has already been
lighting up the stage as guest performers on Rain’s Legend of Rainism
tour, and now the guys are finally making their official debut. MBLAQ’s
debut album Just BLAQ comes with three tracks including their hot dance
single Oh Yeah. This week they share the spotlight with SHINee as the
week’s other biggest mover. (credits to ~S2~)
11. (-6) Epik High – 따라해 (Wannabe)
Score: 442
Genre: Hip-hop
Album: Epik High Vol. 6 CD 2 Track 4 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment:
Epik High is back and they releases their first album (sixth overall)
under their own independent label which can be a revolutionary change
in the Korean music industry. The trio goes back to the roots of
hip-hop by exploring and integrating different genres, including old
school, electronica, classical, trance, drum and bass, bossa nova, and
even trot in this new release. The title song “Wannabe” is moving down
to No. 11 this week. Because of DJ Tukutz’s army enlistment, Epik High
will stop promotion on this album and perhaps that explains why this
song is not ranked higher.
12. (-4) Gavy NJ – 핼쑥해졌대 (In A Pallid State)
Score: 428
Genre: R&B Ballad
Music + Lyrics: Min Myung Ki
Album: Gavy NJ Vol. 4 Side A Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment:
With a member change (Misty replacing Jung Hye Min), Gavy NJ released
Side A of their 4th album, titled “Heartbreak Hotel”. Title song “In A
Pallid State” is a listener friendly ballad once again written by Min
Myung Ki, who is responsible for all their hits. It is a medium tempo
ballad which is perfect for the female listeners who just went through
breakup. This week it falls 4 spots to No. 12.
13. (+9) Dynamic Duo – 죽일 놈 (Guilty)
Score: 404
Genre: Hip-hop
Album: Dynamic Duo Vol. 5 Track 5 Purchase this album
Watch: MV
Comment:
Dynamic Duo, a pair that has made hits with every album release, is
back with a 14-track fifth album before they enter into military
service. If one were to explain the musical elements of this album, one
can say that there are less electronical elements and more instruments
and live recordings. There are also more drum and bass dance sounds
incorporated into the songs. One can hear singing rather than just pure
rap in songs. The title song “Guilty” moves up 9 spots to No. 13 this
week.
14. (-3) f(x) – 라차타 (La Cha Ta)
Score: 401

This is the title song od f(x)’s debut digital single album. It is a
pop dance song that combines hip-hop grooves and electronica sounds.
The title – “LA chA TA” – is an exclamation. The witty lyrics about

This is the representative song for 8eight Lee Hyun’s 1st digital
single album. It features unique lyrics about a man who wants to turn
back time, to 30 minutes before a break-up. The lyrics go well with Lee
Hyun’s poignant voice, and this ballad is the final part of producer
Bang Si-hyuk’s break-up trilogy. In the music video, Lee Hyun acted in
emotional scenes with actress Seon Woo-seon. (credits to Arirang TV –

Comment:
This is the title song of 4Minute’s 1st mini-album “For Muzik.” It
combines street sounds that are popular at European clubs with a simple
melody. The lyrics are about discovering fun in 4Minute’s music. The
synthesized voices of the group members sound like musical instruments,
creating a unique mood. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)
17. (New) Tae Yang – Where U At *** HOT SHOT DEBUT ***
Score: 333
Genre: Hip-hop / R&B Dance
Music + Lyrics: Teddy
Album: Tae Yang digital single “Where U At” Track 1

Comment:
Big Bang’s Tae Yang returns after 1 year and 5 months with a new solo
song, “Where U At.” The song was produced by Teddy and Tae Yang helped
compose the melody. The song is about thinking about a significant
other of the future and missing her, a true story of the singer
himself. It incorporates lively synthesizer sounds. With hiphop,
r&b and awesome dance moves, the song has already topped many
Korean charts. It is our highest debut this week at No. 17.

Maya returns after one and a half year layoff, this time spotting a
more feminine look. Her latest digital single “Majestic” is an up-tempo
rock song and it also features Sang Choo’s rapping. This week it moves
up seven spots to No. 18, becoming Maya’s latest top 20 hit.
19. (-2) Yoon Do Hyun – 너라면 좋겠어 (I Wish It Was You)
Score: 308
Genre: Rock Ballad
Album: Yoon Do Hyun mini-album “Harmony” Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV
Comment:
Yoon Do Hyun hasn’t had a solo hit song since the big hit “Seems To
Fall In Love” in 2005. Now the same team (with songwriter Jun Hae Sung)
is back four years later to produce this excellent rock ballad “I Wish
It Was You”. It is a neo classic ballad that uses a synth orchestra. It
brings out the sadness of the song and fans can hear a whole new
different side of Yoon Do Hyun’s vocals.
20. (-5) Boo Hwal – 생각이나 (Thinking)
Score: 306
Genre: Rock Ballad

Album: Boo Hwal Vol. 12 Track 1 Purchase this album

Comment:
This is the representative track for Boowhal’s 12th regular album,
“25th Anniversary – Retrospect.” Another poetic ballad from the group,
it features quiet beats with a bass drum in the intro, and communicates
the excitement of meeting someone again. The plain and clear
instrumental performance goes well with the powerful vocals. (credits

Comment:
This past fall, I-Ahn Project had released their third story, Possibly
Next Time, a medium tempo number that anyone can easily relate to. It
is about the vulnerable feeling one feels after a breakup. Heo Jin’s
rap is also featured in this track. Check out other songs previously
released by this project on youtube or his cyworld. I highly recommend all his songs. (credits to motoway065 for translations)

The latter member left in 1998 and Jo Won Min replaced him. The duo
debuted in 1994. The two powerful ballad voices harmonized perfectly
for many OSTs and ballads. “I Will Love” is their debut song. It is
about continuing to love even after breaking up. Recently, Green Zone
