Singer songwriter, Byul
completes the third and final installation of her fifth album, “Like a
Star: Primary,” finally releasing a new album in two years. This album
includes singles from the former two parts, “For 6 Years,” “Kiss Day,”
and “Bikini” as well as ten new tracks ranging from heart wrenching
ballads to happy upbeat numbers, all of which she penned the lyrics to.

The
title track is “When I Watch a Drama” which is a ballad number with
lyrics about a girl who is having a hard time coping with her recent
breakup. She compares it to a drama, wishing that her love life would at
least slightly be like those she sees on television. Byul does a great
job showing the anguish one may feel in this situation through her
vocals.

One song that I especially enjoyed was “Bikini” which
unlike her usual ballad numbers, is an upbeat pop rock song. Sampling
the famous Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, the song gives listeners hope
and an optimistic view in life. The style is very reminiscent of
something Younha or Cherry Filter might do, both artists whom I also
enjoy.

“Humming” is another recommended track, a very mellow duet
song perfect to listen to on a lazy day. It is very calming and
soothing to the ears. Those who have a taste in upbeat dance numbers can
also take a look at “You are Leaving” which is an emotional pop number
with a rap featuring.

Overall, I think this album is nothing more
than mediocre. The variety of genres is enough to not totally bore you,
but the songs are not anything special. Those who want to give her a
try, however might want to take a look at her previous singles mentioned
above, as those are the best it can get in my opinion.
