male group, Sweet Sorrow returns after a year with a brand new 2.5 album
titled, Songs. Once again, the singer songwriter quartet composed,
penned the lyrics to, and arranged all the songs, showing listeners what
it takes to truly be a music artist. The dozen or so tracks are mostly
ballads with a bit of medium tempo songs thrown in there, all of which
showcases the group’s vocal talent. Also included in the album are solo
tracks sung by each of the members, all who have the potential and
skills to stand alone.

The album starts off with an a cappella
number, “Hey Song,” a very mellow track that leads listeners into the
following song, “So Cool.” The latter song is probably the most upbeat
song in the album with a jazzy tinge to it. The members do a great job
harmonizing with each other as well as with the key instruments: the
brass and the drums. The next song is “Words Said to You,” the title
track of the album. It is a ballad number, with a message about never
leaving a loved one even if it means to the end of the earth. Sweet
Sorrow does a great job bringing out emotions in the song, but
personally, I didn’t find anything special in this song.

One song
I enjoyed; however, was “Grb 080913,” a solo number sung by member
Seong Jin Hwan. It is a simple acoustic track that features Yeon Jin’s
vocals. Her soothing vocals along with Seong’s, flow well with the
mellow melody. Another song I would recommend would be “Even a Turtle,”
another solo number, this one sung by Kim Yeong Woo. I really enjoyed
the guitar and piano instrumentals, especially when it escalates in
dynamics in the latter half of the song. It is very reminiscent of some
of the Korean indie rock music styles I’ve been indulging, giving this
track an extra brownie point.

In conclusion, I must give Sweet
Sorrow credit for their vocals skills as well as for creating all their
works. There are definitely a number of tracks that I would recommend
those unfamiliar with the group. However, sadly to say, there are more
songs I could not get myself into, due to them sounding too similar with
one another. But with various listens, I think this album may be a
favorite to those who enjoy ballads.
