Asia’s pop dance group, f(x) returned to the music scene just last month with their first mini album, titled NU ABO. The girls have only debuted in September but through their singles, “Lachata” and “Chu” they were able to show off their individual charms and skills. The girls continue on their path as musical artists through this six track album.

The album starts off with the title track, “NU ABO,” an upbeat dance number composed by the writers of BoA’s first American single “Eat You Up.” The girls’ strong and edgy vocals seem to flow perfectly with the heavy beats and synthesized instruments of the song. The funky lyrics about new blood do not make sense but I must say it is quite fun to sing along to. On first listen, the song may seem a little out of place and the cheering crowd heard from beginning to end can be bothersome at times, but I feel that music lovers will appreciate this single nonetheless. It is different, but a good different.

The next song is “Mr. Boogie,” a dance number with very smooth arrangements. Highly anticipated by fans as it was performed at the girls’ pre-debut showcase, the track showcases the members’ strong yet soothing vocals. “Mr. Boogie” caught my ear on first listen due to its haunting, yet alluring melodies. In my opinion, this is yet another solid track and a personal favorite of mine.

The album continues on with three bubbly pop songs. “Ice Cream” and “ME+U” are both electronica influenced tracks with cute lyrics about falling in love and not knowing how to react to a crush. “Surprise Party” on the other hand is a medium-tempo pop number reminiscent of songs popular during the early 2000’s (e.g. BoA’s “My Sweeetie”). These songs are worth a listen, but do not have the extra punch I would like it to have.

The last track is “Sorry (Dear Daddy),” a duet by members, Luna and Krystal. This ballad number about apologizing and thanking one’s father for all his efforts showcases the girls’ vocals and proves that f(x) has what it takes to be more than mere idols.

Overall, I can honestly say that I enjoyed the album. Although “NU ABO” and “Mr. Boogie” were definitely my favorites, the other songs were also to my liking. Music lovers should definitely give rookie artist f(x) a listen!
